The Torrey Canyon Oil Spill was worse than this, for example.
36 million gallons

The Torrey Canyon was one of the first big supertankers. It was also the source of one of the first major oil spills. Although the ship was originally built to carry 60,000 tons, it was enlarged to a 120,000 ton capacity. She was carrying this full capacity of oil when she struck a reef off the coast of Cornwall.

The spill created an oil slick measuring 270 square miles. It contaminated approximately 180 miles of coastland and killed over 15,000 sea birds and enormous numbers of aquatic animals before the spill was finally contained.

Or in somthing Simlar to this current spill,

Ixtoc 1 Oil Spill - June 3, 1979 - March 23, 1980
Location: Bay of Campeche off Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico
Amount of Oil Spilled: 140 million gallons

This oil spill didn't involve a tanker, but rather an offshore oil well. Pemex, a state-owned Mexican petroleum company was drilling an oil well when a blowout occurred. The oil ignited causing the drilling rig to collapse. Oil began gushing out of the well into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 10,000 to 30,000 barrels a day for almost an entire year beforeworkers were finally able to cap the well and stop the leak.

This affected 162 Miles of Coastline.

So far the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has done about 20million Gallons and affected 70 Miles of Coastline.

I'm not saying it isn't terrible this happened, and i really am concered by the enviromental impact but compared to some past disasters if they can stop it soonish in within this month it might not be so bad.

every time David Letterman makes a joke about the spill he referes to BP as British Petroleum, It sounds weird to hear its full name because here in Australia and the UK its referred to as just B.P. Is it always been that in the US? Is it just Letterman who is calling it that or is it the American media/government as a whole?

it seems its being said as to point out who is to blame for this disaster and it not being American.

British Petroleum, BP

No controversy, against the British... London will be rockin' in two years being the US media's darling for the summer.

The reality of it is that BP, British Petroleum whatever we call them had more safety violations by a factor of hundreds than ALL other large oil companies combined.

Corporate criminals in conjunction with a US government willing to bend over backwards for the largest most profitable industry ever known on planet earth and the British government and it's people's pension now too tightly intertwined for comfort in this big black blotch of a stain.

Oh, just for laughs in the American Le Mans Series... there's a BP sponsored Lola LMP car. It started the season out as a BP sponsored car, with all the British Petroleum livery you could ever imagine. Then a couple of months ago...the BP logo on the side could be eclipsed by a powdered donut. Today the logo is all gone and the only trace is the green and yellow sleeves and trim on the pit crew fire suits.

if it seems like that to you, it's not. really. embarrassment is a perfectly natural response and perhaps that's why you're feeling that way.

Im not British why would i feel embarrassed? It just seems its a ploy probably created by the Obama administration to deflect criticism their way. Look BP its British Petroleum that caused this, Send the blame across the pond.

its kinda like everyone referring to KFC as Kentucky Fried Chicken all the time.

You're not British yet you brought it up? Something's bothering you about it or you wouldn't have mentioned it.

There's enough blame to go around for everyone in this ecologic disaster. You getting all nationalist on this is being myopic to say the least.
