The bigger spread between 1st and 2nd means that if the title is not clinched befor eht last race, the gap between the contenders won't be 1 or 2 points, it will be 5 or 10 or 15, and to win the title you need to get a win or a podium, so there will be a good spectacle in the last race. It will overall increase the chargine in the closing races as people fight over 2nd and 3rd in the title, as well as the constructor factor.

I also think the argument that the higher difference in points will mean for more exiting racing up front is ridiculous. I have not watched F1 for as long as some of you but I struggle to remember a time when the 2nd place car that had a chance to win just sat back and settled for 2nd instead of fighting for 1st. If they have a chance, they always fight for first, nothing is going to change now that 1st is worth more points. It also throws consistent results out the window, someone who comes in 3rd 3 races in a row will still have less points than someone who won 2 races and didn't even finish the 3rd. This is just going to put more power into the hands of the powerhouses like Ferrari and Mercedes.

texasmr2, I fail to see how lower budget teams will benefit financially from this, as I understand it the prize money is simply spread out more now, so yes the 9th and 10th place teams will receive something, but it won't be much. I would be interested to hear your argument however if this is not the case.

I'm not sure whether the following will still be the case in 2010, but in the past only teams who scored got money for travel/transportation to GPs - and those are substantial costs and benefits.
Also, it's much easier to please sponsors if you can show some points for their money...

You should start a thread,

from what you've written - no wonder the teams were pissed off about a 40mill budget cap. Having to make massive costs cuts whilst the guys at the top took most of the profits.

1030: BREAKING NEWS - The Formula 1 Commission, the sport's rule-making body, has voted to change the points system for the second time in two months. It has extended the gap from first to second place to seven points rather than five in an attempt to encourage drivers to race to win (as if they don't already), so the top 10 now goes: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. A full news story will follow shortly.

:D good news ,but not unexpected

I have a great idea.

Pay all driver on an overtaking bonus scheme. All drivers start the race without getting paid. Every time they overtake someone pay them, say £10,000. If they lap someone, give them £50,000.
If the driver starts on pole and only laps other drivers, he will lose out on the overtaking bonus....so.....you pay him £500,000 for winning the race.

This will definitely encourage drivers to overtake, and will without doubt make the races more exciting. Bernie, send me a cheque. ;) xx
