Can't believe everyone's so happy about this, but I suppose as long as the format is similar, we'll have two good series with over 30 races between them hopefully! We'll have one race nearly every week from March til November!

who the hell wants to watch second tier racing? i mean, id rather watch gp2 than what f1 will be.

two good series? what you call Williams Force india Campos USF1 and Manor running basically a spec series a good series?

the breakaway is the continuum series. but they will get more TV money which will offset even more of their costs! I can see Force India and Williams jumping over eventually!

Thats what I thought because I was a huge CART fan too, but read this. This guy brings up a great point.

The CART/IRL war resulted from one man thinking IndyCars should be run a specific way, and didn't care that the way it was being run had made it the most popular form of racing in US history. I honestly believe that if both sides had worked together and done things right, it was possible that CART and IRL could have co-existed, but egos on both sides destroyed any hope of that.

The problems in F1 are the result of a governing body running things a certain way and planning to apply rules that the majority of teams aren't happy about, and as a result they're threatening to break away and form their own series.

That's not the CART/IRL war, but it certainly sounds familiar, doesn't it?

That's right. F1's not about to repeat the CART/IRL war. If anything, they're about to repeat the USAC/CART war. Which, as we know, lasted all of one season.

CART won the war with USAC because they had the support of the big names(save one: AJ Foyt - much like the current F1 issue has big name Williams ready to stick with F1), and as a result the fans. Teams and drivers finally got the treatment they felt they were entitled, and the USAC championship collapsed shortly thereafter.

CART had it's problems, but it was genuinely entertaining and the majority of it's teams and drivers were happy to be a part of it.

The history of IndyCar racing tells us that a split can be either a complete disaster, or a brilliant move. History also tells us that a FOTA Grand Prix World Championship(or whatever it'd be called) could be the key for the hellish political dramas currently playing out in Formula One.

FOTA may just become what CART was in 1979.

Speed Channels coverage of F1 is awesome, though as far as the rest of their line up I could do very well without as much NASCAR programming. All in all I have nothing against Speed. My comment was more so directed at F1 having a watered down lineup of teams and drivers with the FOTA teams making up the better part of F1. Who wants to watch Force India race USF1 when you could be watching Ferrari against Merc, BMW and Brawn. To clear it up, I hope the FOTA series gets an American TV deal so I'll be able to watch that.

Oh I'm sorry I just misunderstood you. Speed's coverage is great, and I'm sure they will pick up the fota Breakaway. I cant see any other major channel wanting to broadcast the quali, and race live. If speed does pick up the series, hopefully they use the F1 commentators.

I'm with you, I just hate to see it go down like this. With all the major teams going to a new series, I just don't see how F1 will survive financially when it is no longer the pinnacle of motor sport. As an American, I was also hugely exited for 2010 with USGP, but if they are racing against a bunch of nobodies in what will become a second tier series, who is going to watch it?

F1 is so much more than the FIA, or any of its leaders. Mosley made a mistake here that I expect will finally get him thrown out, maybe then we can see the sport reunited under one name.

Assuming that BBC has to stay committed to F1 in 2010 and thereafter...will we see ITV broadcasting the new FOTA championship with James Allen, Mark Blundell, Steve Rider etc..?

Well that would suck for you Brits who hated the ITV crew, only to get that team back for the better F1 series.

F1 is so much more than the FIA, or any of its leaders. Mosley made a mistake here that I expect will finally get him thrown out, maybe then we can see the sport reunited under one name.

This is just a a guess, but I'd think if the FOTA teams spend tons of money setting up a new series, they won't be willing to throw away that investment and rejoin F1 later on. Unless of course the FOTA series fails completely. Unless something happens very soon to fix the problem, the FOTA teams will be gone from F1 forever.

Well that would suck for you Brits who hated the ITV crew, only to get that team back for the better F1 series.

I think the ITV crew is alright, but they could be better broadcasting like BBC, without the adverts.
Well it might work out for the people who prefer James Allen over Jonathan Legard.

we dont know the contractual agreement between the BBC and FOM. without the teams and its sponsors it might be a breach of contract by FOM so BBC could also break away.

If that is the case, then it is very appealing for the new series.

It's not the outcome anyone really wanted but I am happy to see all this back and forth coming to an end should FOTA actually follow through with their threat. I am still sceptical that FOTA will actually leave F1; I still think a last minute agreement will be made. If not I will still watch F1; the sport will recover just fine, it'll take a hit initially but will come back stronger and there could still be 13 teams on the grid next year assuming that all the teams on the standby list actually make it onto the grid!

the breakaway will have more of a resemblance to F1 than the 2010 Series. So do you follow the sport at its best or the name no matter what its formula?
