who has £40K mate you'd need to be half decent.

easier to go karting and get spotted for Formula Renault or Formula BMW

Formula Renault costs 20K more, the average season costs 60K a year.
Pus if you look at names such as James Walker he started from nothing, he started in Formula Ford in the Scholar class and now is in the World Series For Renault!

yeh but the market for FR is bigger man so your gonna get into a paying team easier as a profesional driver.

you'd have to have a dad like Piquet to go racing with your own team in each series

Hill was able to make such a late start to his motorsport career (at 21) because aside from his name he was an exceptional driver. His age never bothered him either and it wont bother teams either so long as you can keep pumping in the performances.

Is it at all possible to get a career in F1 with no special connections to start you off? Obviously we would all love to be a driver but thats all in our dreams :cloud9: i mean like as a race engineer, pit crew or areodynamasist(im not sure if thats the correct term :P ) im thinking its not easy or else every average joe would be doing it so any help?

Hammond.

well im trainning as a race engineer at the mo , have wanted to do it ive worked on cars with my dad since i was tiny and remember i wasnt much help but it was something i wanted to do and by like ages 6 and 7 i understood what parts did and why they were there , i did well in my gsces (maths and science are key) then went to college and automotvie engineering along with tyre management and now im in the national college of motorsport in silverstone doing motorsport engineering and i may have the chance of work experiance nexy year with force india !!! :D but its not its not what you know , ITS WHO YOU KNOW !

im always working on my 2 cars and worked on cars for free because its something i love doing :)

BUT you need to work your bottom off and be the best around seeing as its a massive industry with lots of other amazingly bright people and be ready to make sacrfices if its your dream !

But 16 and wanting to be a driver is no way good , your way to old , i started karting when i was 8 and had a tested for a seat in a formula bmw at 15 and 16 ......... in this business its not what you know , ITS WHO YOU KNOW !

weather you choose the racing or the mechanics money is more often than not the key ! but all the best anyway :)

But 16 and wanting to be a driver is no way good , your way to old

Thats not true, he's not old at all, he's still young to make it as a driver. Like Vanilla Bear said, James Walker started racing when he was 18, and he's currently in the world series for Renault. Plus its not like you have to race in F1, theres plenty of other great racing series' around the world. I dont know why people think racing in go karts since your 8 will help you as a race car driver. Sure it may look good on your resume, but just because you've been karting since you were a kid doesnt automatically make you a good race car driver. Theres plenty of guys who've been racing for a long time, and still suck. All it takes to race is talent, and money, mostly money but if you work your arse off it doesnt matter.

So HammondF1 if you want to race, go for it, follow your dreams man. Who gives a rats arse that people say you're too old.

You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period.

well have worked both sides of the track if ur starting to look to race at 16 and to stright to cars no one will touch you , you need experiance which in the uk is karts !!!!! i never said i was any good but its how most drivers start is karting weather it be single seaters , gt cars or whatever and as you said racing takes talent if u anit got that and a wad of cash and if you dont have either i going anywhere !

so it wasnt an attack or a dig .....its the way it is !!!

Yeah i agree with you there, plus they had a contreversial season with them have mean't to be undertaking illegal testing? But as you can see, having it that easy has not made Piquet any better of a Driver. maybe worse because he has had it so easy?

Hill was able to make such a late start to his motorsport career (at 21) because aside from his name he was an exceptional driver. His age never bothered him either and it wont bother teams either so long as you can keep pumping in the performances.

Actually, if you have conducted your research properly, you would have fount out that the Racing School h attended he was only classed as "average" and if you look into his Racing Career, not as successful as most people would think, But Button has been classed as crap driver in the past, but now he has the perfect monster of a car then he can win? Same goes for Damon! he signed a contract at the right time, on the right day, Frank would not of known he had a champion of a car? otherwise he would of put his mortgage on it! Luck plays a major part in F1! look at Schumi's career, he made Ferrari mainly what they are today, So has Damon,Senna &Mansell made Williams what they are today! (sorry if i missed any names out) Damon is goo,d but not amazing! Amazing is Mansell or Hamilton & GRAHAM HILL!
