The drivers wages are obscene. Kimi is one the best drivers in F1 but even he doesn't deserve $51 million a year. First rule of business is when costs are too high you cut the wage bill. Capping wages is the best way and let them rake in sponsorship deals on the side.

Correct because normally sponsorship dollars far surpass a driver's yearly wage. A few huge company's CEO's are bypassing their compensation package but they do have even larger yearly stock option's and they are super rich already so their paltry $1-$5M yearly wage is not even missed. Im my era of watching F1 beginning in late '79 or early '80 there are only a few drivers whom I would consider worthy of such a princely sum of $51M per season and they are:

1. Senna.
2. Schumacher.
3. Prost.
4. Lauda.

I'm sorry no driver (not even Senna or Schumi) deserves $51 million a year. Those drivers was good but he is only one part of the team. What about the designers of the car? The engineers that spend tireless hours away from their families working on improvements. It is those guys and gals that give these drivers the chance for glory and are paid paltry amount compared to them. I have much respect for F1 drivers but my respect for the guys that actually build F1 cars is greater.

Personally i dont thing any sports person in the world deserves any where near that amount as a salary when there much more deserving proffessions out there that are drasticly underfunded ( Nurses for example)

Footballers are worse, Frank Fat-boy Lampard and his merry bunch of pussies called Chelsea FC, all on £150K plus a week. And some of them just park their arses on the bench and do nothing. At least with an F1 driver they are always on the limit and there is alway the threat of danger to the car and driver. F1 drivers earn their money through keeping that car on the black stuff at all times (unless your name is Piquet).

I agree that no one should be paid that amount of money, but on the flip side, how long could an engineer design a cutting edge F1 car for? 30 years! how long can a driver, drive top flight in F1? 10 years?

Massa against cutting drivers' wages

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, December 23rd 2008, 11:45 GMT

Felipe Massa thinks teams will be in the wrong if they force salary cuts on drivers as a way to slash budgets - as he believes bigger cost savings can be made elsewhere.

The Brazilian's boss Stefano Domenicali last week prompted the idea of drivers having to accept pay cuts, as F1 braces itself for the effects of the global financial downturn.

"I think that in the following months there will be a major revolution, also with the drivers, as far as retainers are concerned," Domenicali said in an interview with Italian magazine Autosprint.

"I feel that in the current climate the big teams - the small ones can't do that now - won't have the ability anymore to think of offering certain amounts of money that some drivers get. So discussions can be held on this issue."

Those comments have, unsurprisingly, left Massa unimpressed - who believes it would be better for teams to focus their cost-cutting drive elsewhere.

When asked at a press conference for UNICEF in Sao Paulo about whether he supported the move to cut wages, Massa said: "I'm not inclined to it.

"In a competitive sport like this (F1), the driver plays a fundamental part, and the cost of the drivers are small compared to the total budget of the teams. The more people work to reduce costs, the better it is going to be for everybody."

Although supporting moves to cut costs in F1, he said he was wholly opposed to original plans to introduce a standard engine in F1.

"I do not find this idea interesting. The fight to diminish costs is important, but a standard engine gets away from what F1 is all about - and it cannot happen. A Ferrari running with another engine - that is not a Ferrari. It is the same for Mercedes, Toyota or Renault."

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: It annoys me sometimes that things like this become newsworthy. I am sure if anyone of us got called into the bosses office and they say "Right then we are looking at cutting your wage, how do you feel about that?"

Would we say "Yeah that is a great idea thanks"

or

"Boss, if we gotta cut costs how about we save some money from the photocopying budget"

(I hear Mclarens photocopying budget was over 100million in 07)

This idea is right up there with the concept of capping football players' wages - frankly if you can't afford it, sell your team to somebody that can.

Or ask Uncle Bernie to bung you an extra 80 million US per WCC win in return for selling your competitors up the river.

Whatever.

Even if they did put a cap on wadges he would be hard to enforce.
