The person needs to know a lot about F1, engineering and law. Its hard to find one who has that F1 knowledge and is not only completely impartial, but more importantly is perceived to be impartial by fans of all teams. It has to be someone above the sport and petty squabbles. Can such a person exist?

None of the above. And btw. it's Hillary.

Mario Andretti anybody? No
AP? no
MH? yes maybe
MS? Definiteley not
Peter Sauber? Yes
Eddie Jordan? yes
Jos the boss? maybe
Steve Matchett? no

All decent and smart people who know what they're talking about and also give a poo about F1 and its future without much politicking.
Maybe the presidency should be replaced by a 'triumvirate' made up of an ex-driver, ex-team owner/boss and ex-engineer/mechanic.

good idea but should include a fans representative.Everything that is done in F1 is done for the fans, so we should have a say dont you think?

Another one to throw into the hat... Lord Hesketh anyone?

He'd encourage more privateers entering like he did in the 70's, running cars for drivers like Rupert Keegan.

He won the F3 Championship in 1976. Hesketh also gave James Hunt his debut as well - who won a race in Hesketh's car as well. :)

If you're ever watching ESPN Classic (Channel 442 on Sky Digital) and they're showing classic F1 races, watch the 1977 British GP and you get to see Hesketh in his fancy get-up and also smoking a cigarette in the pitlane! You wouldn't be able to smoke in the pitlane today.
