By all means go for it, anyone can create any thread they want (within reason)!
I'm pretty sure this forum's software can't do the flag thing, but admin can confirm that for definite. Perhaps it'd be good if polls could be made 'public' in some cases and users could see who voted for what - i know that is an option on vBulletin forums. DD is that possible here?
In the meantime, this thread is waaaaay past it's sell by date. Locked, and who didn't see it coming?
Perhaps the forum admins can put on a mod that lets us put a little flag in our settings that shows up under your name (other forums I have been on have this). It would be neat. Some folks have put their location in their profile, that helps a lot. But again I would think it is simplistic to think that all Italians are Ferrari fans, Spaniards are all Alonso fans and Brits are all McLaren fans. There are a few that let the colour of their team overtake their sense when posting, but many others who don't.
I almost started a poll the other day asking if people support a specific team, driver or F1 in general. I am by no means an authority... but you have my backing to create that poll.
