Ive just watched the replay again! lewis was ahead of Trulli way before the safety car came out, way before the SV/RK incident? I didnt see how he got ahead because that wasnt shown but he was clearly running ahead? So I dont understand this. It was way before the safety car came out??

When the final safety car is out, you hear Brundle and Legard talking about Trulli being ahead of Hamilton but Hamilton having been ahead earlier. It's pretty much around the start of the final lap.

I could see lewis ahead 4 laps from the end. So why did Trulli go past him when the safety car was out so much later on?

If Hamilton was told to let him past then maybe the penalty should be rescinded, as there could concievably be a precident set whereby drivers purposefully allow other drivers past them in the future, just to get them a penalty; if that makes sense? Unlikely i know but i wouldn't put it past some of the drivers we have seen...

I'm not sure where McLaren got this idea that Hamilton originally passed Trulli under the SC though.

I don't know. Are you watching this online?

No the replay on BBC.

But why would Whitmarsh protest Trullis move under the safety car if he'd told lewis to let him past?

Yeah  I'm just going off what i read - Hamilton said he was told to move over. I'm trying to figure out where i read it...

scotty, i had posted it earlier... i found it on speedtv website...

"Lewis Hamilton has said that McLaren told him to let Jarno Trulli back past after the pair had swapped places under the safety car in Australia.
While the track was under caution Trulli slid wide and onto the grass, so Hamilton was obliged to pass him. Lewis says that the team then asked him to let Trulli back by, presumably because the team feared a penalty."

The great one proves it again! How many drivers can go from 18th to 3rd. lewis Hamilton takes his first step in winning his second F1 championship. Need I say more. I did say he would shock the racing world.

Well, actually, you told us he'd win and lap plenty of people, so whatever Anthony.

Yeah JB dot on. I don't believe he is going to win the title; it's far to soon. If anything I’d go on a JB V Kimi Raikkonen fiasco at the moment? Lewis is not that close yet. He did well but claiming things like that is just ridiculous.

This is basically it. And if it's the case, then it was definitely the wrong decision.

Lewis Hamilton has said that McLaren told him to let Jarno Trulli back past after the pair had swapped places under the safety car in Australia.

While the track was under caution Trulli slid wide and onto the grass, so Hamilton was obliged to pass him. Lewis says that the team then asked him to let Trulli back by, presumably because the team feared a penalty.

However after the race it was Trulli who was penalised for passing under yellows, and docked 25s. Because the field was compacted by the safety car finish, the Italian fell right back to 13th, while Lewis took his third place.

However, speaking as he emerged from parc ferme, Lewis told SPEEDtv.com: ‘I was behind Trulli under the safety car, and clearly you’re not allowed to overtake under the safety car. But he went off in the second to last corner, he went wide on the grass, I guess his tyres were cold. And I was forced to go by. I slowed down as much as I could. I was told to let him back past, but I mean... I don’t know if that’s the regulations, and if it isn’t, then I should have really had third.’

In a team statement Trulli corroborated Hamilton’s story by insisting that the McLaren had slowed down and pulled over so dramatically
that Jarno ‘thought he had a problem.’

However, after the two drivers met with the stewards and given their stories the Italian’s view was discounted, and officials apparently came to the conclusion that Lewis had not voluntarily let him by.

It is not normally possible to appeal against such a penalty because a 25s time penalty is the equivalent of a stop and go, and is issued after incidents that take place in the last five laps and which cannot be dealt with in the normal way.

However, Toyota has found a rarely used channel that allows them to appeal via local Clerk of the Course, former F1 driver Tim Schenken, rather than the usual FIA channels. The move has allowed Toyota to buy some time while it considers the matter.

Hamilton meanwhile was satisfied with his day even before he was promoted a place: ‘With the car that we have, to finish fourth is a great achievement. So we’ll take that and move on and try to do better. I couldn’t have been more on the limit I got as much out of it as I could.

Based on current pace, the title battle will be between the two Brawn drivers with the Williams pair looking good to challenge if today is to be an anomalous result in their season.

I just watched the last few laps and Hamilton passed Trulli 1 lap before Kubica and Vettel crashed and I remember Hamilton still being ahead under the safety car so Trulli must of overtaken him under the safety car.

[EDIT] I have no idea what has gone on because according to that SPEED article Hamilton was back behind Trulli by the time the safety car came out...
