Sebastian Vettel has been given a ten place grid penalty for the Malaysian Grand Prix after the Melbourne stewards judged that his late-race collision with Robert Kubica in Australia was an 'avoidable accident'.

Vettel had been running a close second to Jenson Button for most of the race, but came under pressure from Kubica in the closing stages.

Having got the troublesome super-soft tyres out of the way with a short first stint and then caught the pack again under the safety car, Kubica was closing fast on the two leaders and tried to pass Vettel on the outside at turn three with three laps to go.

Neither driver was willing to give way and they hit each other repeatedly mid-corner before both slamming their damaged cars into the wall on the next straight.

"Sebastian went wide in corner one and then he braked early," said Kubica.

"I was already in front, but he didn’t want to let me by.

"Then he had a lot of understeer and touched me.

"My front wing was under the car, therefore I crashed in corner 5.

"I think Sebastian was a bit too optimistic.

"Had this been the last corner okay, but there were still three laps to go and he really had no realistic chance to defend his position because I was so much quicker.

"We both had a great weekend up to this point and we leave Melbourne with nothing."

Vettel apologised to both his Red Bull team and BMW after the crash.

"I had a stupid racing accident with Robert," he said.

"At the time I turned in I was ahead, but I couldn't keep up speed in the corner and Robert was on a harder tyre, so was much quicker.

"At the time we collided he was in front, but I had nowhere to go, I couldn't stop the car, or turn to the right and my tyres were gone.

"Should I have let him go? You always want to fight.

"Maybe I should have said let him go and bring third back home, but that's life.

"I tried to defend and, up to the mid-corner, I had reason, but then I had no grip to avoid a collision."

Kubica reckoned the tangle cost him a win given the rate at which he had been closing on Vettel and Button as their tyres faded.

"What a disappointment," he said.

"I had a chance to win this race because Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel were on soft tyres and struggling, while I was on the harder compound and was able to drive much quicker."

Don’t worry I was watching Classical F1 I enjoy those times a little more.... even though Ferrari’s success rate wasn’t as high as today’s

Wow! What a way to round off a crazy weekend! If I can be honest Kubica and Vettel's coming together in the closing stages is something we have not seen too much of over the years and I think now thanks to the new regulations the drivers aren't afraid to "go for it".

It's a shame Nico didn't get on the podium after he over-cooked his tyres, but being saved by the safety car to collect 3 points, the fastest lap of the race, and the fact Williams are a major force again isn't a bad way to start things. I am dissapointed by Nakajima though by his mistake when he took too much kerb and put it in the wall. Hopefully the FW31's aerodynamics will be good enough to keep Williams towards the top, because we all know what happened last year... having said that in previous years prior to 2008 Williams have gone well at Malaysia. It wasn't half satisfying to see Nico overtaking Ferraris.

You have to feel for Mark Webber, victim of first corner mayhem for the second year in a row.

Brawn didn't dissapear into the distance like everybody predicted, and it's going to be interesting to see if they can keep it up in Malaysia. Well done to them, Ross Brawn, Button and Barrichello, even with that damaged front wing he was still quick! The car has also shown good reliabilty - unlike the Ferraris - when that was a big question.

Watching the second time that Rubens made contact, the one where he tagged Kimi, and it was a smaller-scale version of Kimi's accident with Adrian at Monaco last year. He just appeared to get a bit of a twitch at the back end under braking and couldn't slow down in time. Studying the first incident at the start, his car really slammed in to Webber's! How the front wing didn't come off I will never know.
