Alonso agrees to huge pay cut with Renault as formula one feels the crunch

• Fernando Alonso rumoured to have accepted £6m cut
• 'Formula one is in the midst of the crisis' says Briatore

guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 25 March 2009 06.04 GMT Article history

Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet have agreed to take a pay cut, according to the Renault manager Flavio Briatore. Reports suggest that Alonso's drop in wages could be as much as £6m.

Even the cash-rich sport of formula one has not escaped the global financial crisis and Briatore has revealed that the double world champion Alonso - one of the highest paid drivers - and his team-mate have accepted a decrease in their pay-packets.

"I told the Renault drivers that it would be appropriate to lower their salaries," he told Italian magazine Chi. "They understood and we reached an agreement. Formula one is in the midst of the crisis and we will try to adapt in way that we can face this situation, reducing our costs."

Good. Although both driver still get huge amounts in my opinion, hopefully Renault (like Button did at Brawn) are setting an example to the other teams. I bet Massa won't be pleased.

IMO it's OK to be well paid.
That's what for they paying to their managers :)

If team want a well known driver and they ready to pay so be it.
Anyone has link to current wages of all drivers?

I hope they gave Piquet a bigger drop than Alonso.

They should give him his P45 instead.

I bet Alonso misses Fisichella as his "spear carrier", and I'm sure Pat Symonds and his cattle prod do too. :hehe:

Im sure Renault envisioned Nelson as the perfect replacement for Fisi in that department. However instead of spearing the Mclaren's, Ferrari's etc he's only quick enough to race around with... well Fisichella
