Bernie Ecclestone has revealed there will be at three new teams joining Formula 1 next season.

The F1 supremo said 26 cars will be on the starting grid for the 2010 campaign and that a medals-system will determine the championship.

"We'll have 26 cars on the grid next year - we've got a lot of people confirmed," said Ecclestone.

"It won't be necessary to discuss it (the medals). If the rules are out before they enter that's how it is."

26 cars sounds awesome, but dont get your hopes up because I wouldnt be surprised if Bernie is lying again. And will he ever give up on his stupid medal idea??

The medal system is completely and utterly ridiculous, i could easily live with the 'most races wins the title' idea over that - if it meant keeping some semblance of the points system and therefore stopping the entire midfield and back from being redundant.

Why would 3 new teams enter with the likely prospect of winning nothing [under the medal system], not even a WC point?

Why push something through that all the fans, all the driver and all the teams don't want. It's just a power battle really. Why is one person allowed to wield that power. In any other spot it would be a whole team of people all of which would crush the one mad man amoungst them-BE. And please no-one point out the FIA because what good is a team of people if they all listen to the one raving loon

So that's US GPE (I'm just gonna call them US GP) and two other teams. Prodrive perhaps. I mean David Richards has clearly expressed his intent to join F1. He would've been on the grid for 08 had his customer car thing not fallen through. So it's most likely he'll be the other team.

As for the thrid team. I seem to remember some team from GP2 and F3 expressing an interest. Not sure who though.
Tony Teixeira (a1 gp CEO) has expressed his interest in starting an F1 team. But whether or not that's going ahead is totally unsure.

Hyundai are another maybe. "What, Hyundai!!!" I hear you say.

But apparently they had plans. Whether or not those plans remain the same, who knows.

Does anybody remember that team last year competing in the Renault World Series which was looking to enter F1? I wouldn't be surprised if they were one of the entrants, which these budget caps supposedly coming in this is going to work in their favour, along with any other new privateers.

I'd rather have the same number of teams just now, than 3 more teams, if it means this ridiculous "two tier" budget system passes.

That can't be right, the rules stipulate a 24 Car grid max, don't they?

So I assume what he mans is...Pre-Qualifying is back :S

I thought 26 was the max?

They used to have pre-qualifying for if there were more than 30 cars so the Eurobruns, Colonis and Life could get sent home early. 30 cars would then take part in normal qualifying and only 26 would qualify for the race.

Hmm, perhaps you're right.
