I went to an F1 shop in the city and I noticed something that I expected to see. The Ferrari merchandise out ranked all other team merchandise by at least 3 to 1. I have also noticed that in the wake of the upcoming Melbourne Grand Prix that most of the stalls set up at near the venue and in and around the inner parts of the city, 70% of the merchanise is easily Ferrari. At Lygon Street Carlton it is around 90% Ferrari merchandise being sold. So my conclusion to this is that most people must surely go for Ferrari. It makes sense. There is more Ferrari merchandise available because of demand and that it will sell. If they had the same amount of say McLaren merchandise available it will mostly remain unsold. That would be a fact because if there was a higher demand for McLaren merchandise they would have as many as Ferrari merchandise made available. So clearly it is a fact that most people who follow F1 go for Ferrari. That would make sense anyway as Ferrari are the greatest and most glamorous F1 team by far and streets ahead of any competitor.

Doubtless someone will be along in a minute to say that clearly Ferrari had some underhand deal with the shopkeeper to get their products pushed to the forefront, when in reality some other team is the "deserving" best seller.

Bernie doesn't love Ferrari

"But surely Brawn is a man of total integrity who would never take advantage? “What, working for Ferrari?” replies Ecclestone"

Ferrari are a very popular team, no doubt. Regardless of how badly they may do, they would still have a healthy support. Although, I wouldn't say they're as far ahead in popularity as everybody things, for several good reasons. If you look back over recent decades, surveys conducted about the sport have determined that a team's popularity is heavily dependant on the team's level of success, whose driving for the team and where the fans are from. So, in the 1980s and early '90s, McLaren were the most popular team in Formula One, because of their success, and drivers such as Ayrton Senna. At the moment, McLaren have been found to be the most popular team, as McLaren are doing well again and because of Lewis Hamilton's popularity. Then, in between those years, Ferrari were very popular, because of their and Schumacher's unprecedented success. Williams, too, had a fair degree of popularity in the mid-90s, but no as much as McLaren and Ferrari at their peaks, as Williams didn't really have any superstar drivers. Finally, Kiki, I wouldn't use clothing as a gauge of popularity. McLaren like to do their own marketing. It was only in 2007 that they decided to allow third parties to sell some of their teamware.

I think also Melbourne is home to alot of people with Italian dissent, so it is no surprise really that there is a large amount of Ferrari Merchandise on sale.

I'd agree with what you are saying. Often it is the driver which creates merchandise sales and causes fans to align with certain teams. Hence why Hamilton mania has seen a flurry in Mclaren sponsorship. What I do hate is people overlooking the team when they see your merchandise and believing you are a fan of the driver only. Like you said when you wore your Mclaren tshirt and people assumed you were simply a Hamilton fan.
Ferrari is really unique for its branding around the world and its relation to the people of Italy means that is has widespread support throughout the world, regardless if people are F1 fans are not.

I'd also say AKR to base your assumptions on one city really is poor. Come to Silverstone this year and every merchandise stand will be dominated by Mclaren team wear. I guarantee that.
