So, here we go again. The fiasco of the points system awarded to drivers on finishing a race.

For years I have been irritated by the points system used in F1, which awards no points after finishing position 8. What is the point of trying, if you are in position 11 say, in the closing laps of a race? No doubt there are undisclosed monetary rewards based on finishing positions, but that is of no interest to us, the spectators. Can nobody in the FIA count to more than 10?

Why not start by awarding the winner 100 points, then perhaps 75 for second place, 60 for third, 50 for fourth, 45 for fifth, 40 for sixth, 35 for seventh, 31 for eighth, 27 for ninth, 24 for tenth, 21 for eleventh, 18 for twelfth, 15 for thirteenth, 12 for fourteenth, 10 for fifteenth, 8 for sixteenth, 6 for seventeenth, 4 for eighteenth, 2 for nineteenth, 0 for position twenty.

I'm sure the mathematicians will pull this idea to pieces, but you get the principle, I hope. If only ten finish, no problem, remaining points not awarded. I cannot begin to understand the Nascar points system, but they do award points for TRYING, such as laps led, etc, and goodness knows we need a bit more effort from some drivers in F1.

I agree that a change is needed and points should be awarded for finishing in positions lower that 8thbut I dont want to see a system adapted that awards 100 poins etc, that IMO is silly.

I always hated this idea. Points should stop at Position 10 at the latest. I'm perfectly satisfied with 8 though.

The trouble with scoring all the way down the grid is that the whole system has to be changed if a team drops out before a season or if another joins. I think choosing a top selection of finishers who score points is fair and I agree that it should be 10. The race winner should be rewarded more heavily imo but any more than a 4 point gap from 1st to 2nd is unfair. I would also like to see 1 point awarded to the driver who qualifies on pole and the driver who sets the fastest lap. This way, some distinction could be made between a narrow victory and a dominant weekend.
My ideal system would be;

1st = 15
2nd = 12
3rd = 9
4th = 7
5th = 6
6th = 5
7th = 4
8th = 3
9th = 2
10th = 1

The points gap increases once the podium positions are reached as a reflection of the added prestige of finishing in those top 3 positions

i always thought it was a bit of a joke during the late 80s early 90s when there where a lot more cars and yet only the top 6 got points, I never thought that was fair. we may still have some of the teams that dissapeared if it was more of a points system like motogp for instance

Well...points mean monetory concesions towards transport to races. More points places means giving out more money. Always a sticky point in certain quarters. I think points for the the top 8 is fine but, Qualifying and Fastest race lap could be rewarded with a point and maybe an point awarded to the also ran but hardest charger of the race. They could call it the Jean Alesi point!

All of the above ideas are better than bernies gold medal plan, and the stubborn douchebag will have it in without a doubt in 2010.

i think a top 10 would be ideal, with a point going to fastest qualifier. i guess the fastest lap will be handy for the top runners who have a shocking first few laps, maybe have to come in for a half hour repair, then go back out in what will essentially be a qualifying spec to set a quick time to salvage a point. but IMO, its not a god idea

The best system - for me - is something like that :

1º - 23 (instead of 12)
2º - 20 (instead of 9)
3º - 18 (instead of 7)
4º - 16 (instead of 5)
5º - 15 (instead of 4)
6º - 14 (instead of 3)
7º - 13 (instead of 2)
8º - 12 (instead of 1)
9º - 11 (instead of 0)
.
.
.
20º - 1 (instead of 0)

It's kinda the same thing of what FOTA suggered (the weight of first positions) but giving points to all positions...
I think it would be fairer...

I don't like the idea of points for every posistion. Just doesn't seem right.

It's a big deal when and if a team like Super Aguri or Force India finish in 8th. But with this system it would just be seen as a good day, rather than an extradordinary one. It adds a bit of excitement to what would otherwise be a very boring mid-feild.

Have to agree with your general sentiment. It would devalue points - for smaller teams a point is a BIG thing and should remain so.
