They're treating Brawn as a new entry, with special priviliges. Probably made to make it more attractive to potential buyers and be able save Honda. That f1 made it so attractive must mean that they would have gotten in trouble with an 18 car grid.

I wouldnt complain much if I were Brawn about the treatment his team is getting (that 3rd Merc costumer engine was a hell of a gimmie!)... Besides, if I were him i'd be wishing for a quick diassociation from the Honda name.

I agree, but they are either a new team or they are not. I am sure there is a story in the background and the 18 car grid might be it. I am sure it will come out into the open in a few years

Basically, the By-Laws mean that it has to be treated as a new entry, but (Owing to the circumstances) the FiA has executed its right to waive the Entry Fee.

Amazingly, the Pit Garages don't match the numbering decision. Oh well.

Technically McLaren is majority owned by Mercedes so to say they supply their own team as a customer doesnt make sense!

The shareholding is thus Daimler 40%, Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company 30%, Ron Dennis 15% and Mansour Ojjeh 15%.[4]

Yep i wonder if it works the same for Ferrari and their engine counts as a customer engine?

Nor did they last year. It's a silly business, indeed.

same can be said about Renault, BMWSauber, former Honda team. they would not be classed as customers to their own engines.

think Toyota build chassis and Engine inhouse

how so? think you missed my point. Renaults engines come from France where as their chassis and final construction is done in the UK. Toyota and Ferrari build their engines and car in the same factory.

so technically Renault F1 is a customer to Renault high performance engines as they are not made at Renault F1's HQ.

It doesn't make a difference, though. In the end, if more than two teams are to use one brand of engine then the FIA need to agree to it.

A major car manufacturer may not directly or indirectly supply engines for more than two teams of two cars each without the consent of the FIA. For the purposes of this Article 13.3, a major car manufacturer is a company whose shares are quoted on a recognised stock exchange or the subsidiary of such a company.

Ferrari, Renault, Mercedes, Toyota and BMW all fall in to that category. The regulation does not exclude teams under the same name, so all things point to them being included in the permitted two.
