deferred is a big word for me. So does this mean that the stupid rule changes have been postponed until 2010?

No. It means that FOTA and FIA will look again at implementing the rule for the 2010 season. However nothing is concrete yet and they could end up using the points system in 2010

Thank goodness for that!! This is very similar to the medals fiasco when Bernie claimed that the idea was "on the verge of being approved and all the teams are behind it.". Are the FIA playing similar tactics to what Bernie did?

Victory for Common Sense. Victory for Formula One.
However this is only one battle, the war is still on going. Like Mclaren Fan said, the system has only been deferred. As much as I would like to see this idea scrapped, it is only adding a backlog of changes for 2010. The new proposals are going to create a new political war which will undoubtably create much drama!

As much as the FOM/FIA partnership has had its weaknesses exposed with today's announcement, FOTA were also shown to be weak as they failed to have their proposals implemented nor prevent this stupid rule ever being passed in the first place!

But on paper FOTA is the powerful unit. They are the reason we all watch F1 in the first place!! The FIA and FOM are easily replaced and I want to see FOTA flexing its muscles over the year to ensure that their voice is the loudest when it comes to running this sport. That can happen as long as they stick together.

Max and Bernie are probably trying to devise a divide and conquer plan as we speak.

I think it's the other way around: on paper, the FIA and FOM (i.e., MM and BE) are the powerhouses (the city hall and city finance department). FOTA is like the homeowners association (a private club so to speak) that needs to first establish itself and nibble away on the big powerhouses to cement their influence.

thank f***! they finnaly see some sence. and to think i was doubting F1 (of course I would of still watched it but...)

It just doesnt make sence fo the wins system. F1 is about history, and if they changed it to a wins system them the past of f1 would be redundant. also its stupid because one driver could win the 1st 4 races (lets say JB in the YawnGP) and then his team pulls out due to funding, then the rest of the season is won by various other drivers who dont get more than 3 wins apiece. So who is the more deserved driver at the end of the season? :banghead:

Lets put team allegiances to one side for a moment. We all want to see an exciting season, last year it came down to the very last race to decide the championship, now thats exciting. What I didn't want to see is a driver being crowned just over halfway through the season, what is then the incentive for the other teams - none.
FOTA have unified and have won the day, and they need to tell Bernie and Co that they will not implement his barmy ideas next season otherwise they will not participate, and if they all stick together on this they will win the day. This is a victory for common sense, I am sooo excited now for the start of the season

I don't think anyone really wanted the rules. The FIA just wanted to put the teams in their place.

But, have we really seen FOTA power in action, or is it just a win on a technicality, that all teams must agree on a rule change this close to the start of the season? Is this evidence that the FIA will/has to listen to the teams, or did they just over-extend a bit.

Just having a look at some results and how many races would be left after the wdc had been decided using the race wins. Going back to 2005 it would all go down to the last race but in 2004 Schumacher would've tied it up with 8 races left (how much more exciting that season would've been) and in 2003 it could've been a battle in the last 3 races between Ralf and Michael only Michael took the first of those and the championship with 2 races left.
