FIA Press Statement

Press Release
FIA Formula One World Championship 20/03/2009
On 17 March, the FIA World Motor Sport Council unanimously rejected FOTA’s proposed amendment to the points system for the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. The ‘winner takes all’ proposal made by the commercial rights holder (who had been told that the teams were in favour) was then approved.

If, for any reason, the Formula One teams do not now agree with the new system, its implementation will be deferred until 2010.

i liked the way Luca do Montezemolo sugged Ferrari might leave F1

It’s more important to have a calmer atmosphere and to avoid continual changes which generate uncertainty, for those who work in the sport and raises question marks about the future

SarahB62, thats kinda missleading. 3/17 they put the change in place. Today they went back to the old system. Thats my take from it.

That is the offical press release just up on the FIA website - guess they are to embarrassed to issue a press release stating they had backed down in the face of FOTA pressure

well one thing is certain, they (FIA) got people into talking about F1 again, and certainly raised awareness to the sport in some markets where it was slowly fading (like right here where I live)! funny ... right on time for the Australian GP ... hehehe

This is strange:

"The 'winner-takes-all' proposal made by the commercial rights holder (Bernie Ecclestone, who had been told the teams were in favour) was then approved.

Who told Bernie the teams were in favour, who approved it and what was their knowledge of the teams opinions?

Good that it's happened though.

This is a fantastic piece of news. Hypothetically the season could have been done and dusted by Silverstone. Here's to an exciting 2009 season - BRING IT ON !!:clap:
