Does seem random that no other countries/or groups of, are called 'Great'.

I think the "Great" bit is just part of the name. you could also argue why does the USA have to say they are United States, why not just call yourself America!
It is all just a kick back for something in the past.

Because they united the 50 individual states to form a single country (well, historically it was a process of 13 colonies that founded it and then they added more). At any rate, they are still states with very different characteristics, laws, etc.

I think you've missed the point of where the Great came from. Check your history or check back in this thread for Bud's explanation. :wink:

I think you've missed the point of where the Great came from. Check your history or check back in this thread for Bud's explanation. :wink:


I didn't miss anything. I simply find it presumptuous and preposterous to put great before a countries name no matter the history...

I didn't miss anything. I simply find it presumptuous and preposterous to put great before a countries name no matter the history...

but you dont think this when a certain country labels its NATIONAL sporting teams as Champions of the WORLD?

As i said earlier Great means ALL its pretty simple to understand if you didnt have a certain distaste for the UK. which is not your fault most mainland Europeans do!
