Linfox pushing for Aus GP venue change

A feasibility study into the possible construction of a Formula One circuit near Melbourne has been completed.

Headed by Linfox, an Australian transport company, the $200m venue would be capable of hosting the Grand Prix away from Albert Park, south of Melbourne.

The track would be located at Avalon airport, a 45-minute drive from the city. Avalon is operated by Linfox.

The Victorian state government's support of the loss-making Australian Grand Prix is controversial, and Linfox Director Andrew Fox said Avalon would be a cheaper alternative.

"If the Government could extend the agreement with Bernie Ecclestone then we believe we can justify a new facility of an F1 standard - world's best practice - at Avalon," he is quoted as saying by the local Herald Sun.

Fox said a permanent facility would cost less to prepare each year and that it "would be wrong of the government not to address something that might be of less expense for the taxpayer."

The Albert Park contract is set to run until 2015. Linfox has not held any talks with the government, and a spokesman said moving the race is not under consideration.

If this linfox bid tells us anything, its that options will nee to be sought over the next few years as to a viable location for the Australian GP. Thanks to a bunch of winging melbournites and tree huggin hippies, it is unlikley that the gp will ever be held at night. Bernie is set on keepin his European audiences happy, and although the contract at current stands at 2015, beyond then who knows.

Ss i post a question, Suggestions of other venues for the Australian GP.

PS - i am a big fan of the Albert park circuit.

Bring it back to Adelaide! (Can you tell I'm from Adelaide? And I live close to the city with a direct bus service so it would be convenient for me).

Though I have never really been to the Adelaide races (noone took me when I was little :( ) I am going to the Melbourne GP for the first time this year (Hooray!). I'll have to reserve judgement about Melbourne/Albert Park until then (though I do see it's close to the city which is good for visitors).

I have heard that Perth is a lovely city - don't know about any tracks/circuits that would be suitable for F1 though. Brisbane already hosts an Indy(?) race I think. NT is too hot? Then it just leaves Sydney... not that moved by a race there. Wait, I forgot about Tasmania....
What about Bathurst or Phhilip Island? Too bogan-like? Not suitable for F1 cars?

If the Melbourne GP is costing the taxpayer so much money (as it has for years), I don't really think building a new track will really be that beneficial.
The current contract runs until 2015, but is that for Melbourne or just an Australian race?

OH, I almost forgot... There has to be a reason why an F1 race (the pinnacle of motorsport) is losing so much money. Perhaps not enough interest because the sport isn't really promoted - and that comes down to the dismal coverage Channel Ten gives it  (and even worse by Ch 9 in previous years) . But that is a story for another day...

Brisbane don't host anything, you're thinking of the Lexmark Indy 500, held in the Gold Coast. That is, in my opinion the best track in Australia.

The State Government has approved for a new Sydney Street circuit. http://www.v8supercarevents.com.au/sydney/downloads/Sydney400TrackMap_Draft.pdf

But seriously, can a track ever get anymore boring?

Bathurst is too steep. Phillip Island is too narrow. But the owners of Phillip Island want to widen the track to be suitable for Formula One Cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Island_Grand_Prix_Circuit

Now look at that track! I would love the Grand Prix at Port Phillip Island.

See, I don't want us to have too many street circuits. I'd like more raceways. Port Phillip Island is the clear winner of Australian Race Tracks. It has so much success hosting the MotoGP already.

A return to Adelaide would be very special.
Bud will probably know... so this it to Bud...
Is there any great desire in Adelaide for the GP to ever return or is it just too costly and impractical to stage?

na there isnt, there was talk when Melbourne looked liked they would not resign with Bernie but it was just talk!Besides the track is being used once a year for the V8SC series and i dont think the government would like to disrupt the city streets twice a year. added the Clipsal 500 gets a bigger crowd than the Melbourne GP so really they would be stupid to ditch that event for an event they wouldnt make a profit out of.

Cheers, I thought it would be the case. How much cheaper are the V8 tickets compared to the Grand Prix?

I like the Albert Park circuit, but a change is as good as a rest.

While we're at it, can we put Australia somewhere else on the Calendar? They've been hosting the opener almost non-stop for so long, it's getting boring.

alot cheaper, 4 day grand stand passes range from i think 140 to 300 while the F1 are twice that. But ill be going to Melbourne and will probably not go to the V8s here. Funny that.

also keep your eyes peeled on Sydney they are having a street race for the V8s this year if that goes well i bet they will try and pinch the F1's just to spite Melbourne :hehe:

I do take a passing interest in V8s. I think it's pretty interesting. However bar Motors Tv it gets very little air time which is a pity.

F1 prices are far too dear. A weekend ticket for this years British GP was near £300 for me this year, to go and see the national sports for the weekend its something like £30...
You do the math...

From F1 Live:

John Brumby, Premier of the Victorian state government in Australia, has played down reports that the Grand Prix in Melbourne could be moved.

We reported earlier this week that the company Linfox, a local transport giant, was keen on constructing a $200m venue at Avalon airport that would be cheaper to operate than the semi-permanent Albert Park circuit.

"I saw the speculation about it but I think the GP itself, they're pretty happy with where they are so I don't think it has gone any further than that (feasibility study)," Brumby, whose government picks up the losses of the annual Australian Grand Prix, told the Geelong Advertiser newspaper.

Sydney maybe?
I remember the state government having talks about that.
Obviously not Eastern Creek because that's gone to the dogs now...
(even though that would be lovely, seeing as I live about 10 minutes away)
But they were going to build a new track for it, weren't they?
And have a twilight race?
Ecclestone seemed to like that idea I recall...

I really hope it moves from Melbourne though.
They hog all the sporting events ):

The creek would work, but the ARDC who own it are being Pig headed about it. it needs to be managed better.

the $200 Million that they are pumping into homebush for the v8's in December should have been spent on a circuit extension and facilities upgrade on the creek to bring it up to international standards.

For non locals, you may recognize the track from past Australian GP's in the A1 series...
