I don't think Branson is looking for publicity. I'm pretty convinced he was certain about buying Northern Rock, for there is a financial side to Virgin's dealings. In fact, they are trying to start up some new banks at the moment. Starting up banks, taking over failing banks, running airlines etc. all in the current economy weather is very risky. Branson does want to get into Formula One. He's always found it entertaining, it would be great publicity for Virgin and he sees the sport as a vehicle to develop greener forms of energy. He does not, however, want to endanger Virgin, which is why he is seeking reassurances from Ecclestone about cost-cutting etc.

tbh I think I have to agree with quite a few of the previous posts, Branson has something to offer and'll only do so under his own terms. If it was simply a case of the current conditions in F1 not meeting Bransons requirements then things would never have reached the level they've got to.
