Bernie's medal plans given a historical perspective.

There's just 1 thing - had Hamilton's Spa win not been, um, removed form him he & Massa would have finished the season with the same number of wins.

Who would have been champion then?

Anybody care to do the maths?

Na if Lewis' rightful win stood at Spa that would have given him 6 but you have to minus 1 from Massa so he would have had 5.

but i cant believe the FIA would go to all the trouble to put that on their website for the public. You cannot change the result without taking into account the drivers motivations during those seasons and knowing what they had to do to get the title.
for example 1988 if you took the whole seasons points earned Prost actually had more than Senna but they only took the best 11 results towards the championship.

Very valid point - each driver and team would always race to what suited their strategy to win so coss referencing the medal tally against actual tally does not give a true comparison but it is interesting.

At the risk of nneding to renew my tin foil helmet, I note that Michael Schumachwer's total exclusion from the 1997 results has, in this official FIA press release, been ignored.

I trust this is not some attempt to sweep the biggest single punishement any driver has ever recieved under the carpet.

FIA(t) indeed.

Your foil helmet is defective as it clearly states:
For the purposes of this assessment:wink: .

From itv-f1.com:-

"The FIA analysis notes that the Brabham team would have lost the titles it won with Piquet under Ecclestone’s ownership."

Absolutely beautiful!

What a great way to shove the idea back in Bernie's face! Maybe that's what "pissed him off" so much.

This analysis shows that, commercially, the medal idea would be a bad one (assuming that strategies and levels of both motivation and application remained constant). It also shows that the drier with the most wins was usually the champion anyway and that, in fact, in affected drivers further down the grid more. The majority of championships where the ending time was altered ended up finishing earlier. That would not spark more interest in the sport.

Exactly. Ecclestone is just a laughingstock.

Anyone with more than a passing interest is only going to calculate the points for themselves anyways, so that alone puts me off this idea, because if the championship 'official' result is different then everyone's just gonna bitch.

Plus, EVERYONE was so pissed for Sutil when he got wiped out of his chance at points. That situation would be taken away, and it's one of the few times when all F1 fans are routing for the same thing! I mean, who didn't love it when Minardi scored a point or two?
