I might get the heater on this but... If things continue to go badly for the economy and sponsorship and money dry up for F1, would there be a possibility that Formula 1 would forego the 2010 or 2011 season? You could argue that it could help teams really refocus on a cost effective formula. Have there been any years in history outside of world war, where there was not a championship season?

I don't want to see a year without Formula 1.

From 1950 onwards there has never been a break year in the world championship. I don't Formula 1 would do anything like that, but with funds drying up id expect the spectacle to remain, but maybe not as big.

If the worst came to the worst, I'd imagine testing and expensive car development would be banned completely and engines would have to last even longer. This would lower costs so much that aspiring garagists who've weathered the crunch would probably enter the sport... but not before Bernie shoves his money-grabbing hands in the way.

In this age of when an F1 car takes months to design and build, back in the 70's teams run by the like of Lord Hesketh would be able to design and build a competitive car within a week.

And it would last two years. That could be a viable option actually, a bit sucky - but better than no championship at all. I have to admit, I think F1 will survive the credit crunch, but it won't thrive. Max looks like he is actually doing exactly what needs to be done. I can't complain at the simple aero or KERS. Both are really interesting. And they will, in a few years, be very cost effective and eco friendly (admitedly, KERS will be expensive - but its a matter of now or later, so it doesn't really matter)

Years ago some years a team would make a B-variant of the previous year's car, like the FW13 in my signature for instance. Introduced in late 1989 (took practically all season to get working properly) and then a B version was used for 1990. McLaren did the same thing too with their MP4/5.

I would expect 3 car teams to become a very real prospect if we lose anyone else...
