I know how they feel. For years my pal and our kids (classmates) bought 3 day passes and there was a kids concession. This seasons seats were NOT available until after end race (in case Hammers won) and yes, guess what? No childrens concessions and a hike in prices for the stands. So we will be on BBC this year. Talk about killing your fan base. Whiplash and the Gnome in that big trough again.................

I got to see Quals from a covered Club Silverstone grandstand with two meals included last year, after being bused up from work, all for free! Luckily I also know a guy who marshals and normally helps me out with either Fri or Sat general admission tickets so hopefully I'll still get to see some live action this year without having to pay more than petrol.

FIA President Max Mosley has admitted little sympathy for Formula One drivers refusing to pay for this year's more expensive Superlicences.

It emerged last month that the drivers' representative union, the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), asked fellow drivers to hold off renewing their mandatory credentials for 2009 following the latest price hike.

After the large price increase at the beginning of 2008, the FIA is for this year charging an additional €400 per license, and €100 per point.

But Mosley on Wednesday dismissed their position as ‘silly’, warning that having an up-to-date Superlicense is compulsory.

"The drivers are the principal beneficiaries of all the money invested in safety measures," he said. "They told me it was causing hardship, but that's a complete nonsense.
To earn tens of millions, live in a tax haven and complain about having to pay 2 percent of your income, it's just so silly.”

He confirmed that no driver has yet submitted their application for a 2009 license but said "that doesn't usually happen for a while anyway."

Last month, the 68-year-old Briton offered to engage with the drivers on the issue, but only if they reveal precise details about their incomes.

"They don't seem to want to give me that information," Mosley said.

ormula One's driver representative body has hit back at Max Mosley in their dispute over expensive Super Licences.

Every driver must obtain a Super License from the sport's governing FIA, but last year the price was spiked by between 200 and 350 per cent.

A further increase in line with inflation has enraged the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, moving the GPDA to ask the 2009 field to hold off paying the fees.

FIA President Max Mosley this week dismissed their position as "silly" and "nonsense," arguing that it is the high-earning drivers benefitting from safety advances while living in tax havens.

In a statement of response issued late Friday, the GPDA - claiming their license is the most expensive in the world of sport - said the recent price-hikes are "inherently unfair" and "unreasonable."

The body also responded to Mosley's position that he will only consider the issue if the drivers reveal precise details about their earnings.

"A letter was sent by the GPDA in December declining the request because it was not relevant to ascertaining the appropriate Super Licence fees," the statement said.

"Furthermore, drivers' gross (and net) earnings are confidential to the drivers, their management and financial advisors and any relevant tax authorities, and should be respected as such."

The GPDA said increases to their fees should cover only "administrative" costs rather than be "a revenue stream" for the Paris-based federation.

"The FIA should raise sufficient funds from the exploitation of its commercial rights," the drivers continued.

"As a principle, the drivers should not be taxed to fund the costs of others fulfilling their legal duty to the drivers," they said.

Hmm. Personally, I feel Mosley's plan to look at the licence fee based on wages is fair enough.

If the license fees are being used for safety, then the drivers should be chipping in. If, as I suspect, they are being used to pad the FIA's coffers and give bonuses to the management then I think the drivers have a very good point. Mosely says the FIA should be given the drivers financial info....so turn about is fair play....the drivers have contributed XXX amount of funds over the past several years....show them what you have done with ever penny.

I guess what I am saying is there always seems to be one party of a deal who is being greedy and underhanded...and in this case I think it's the FIA. When Mosely shows me where he risks his life and limb on a race weekend....I'll start worrying about him a little more. Until then, I'll likely side with those who risk their lives.
