But even though team boss Ron Dennis groomed Hamilton through racing's junior classes at huge expense, not to mention the existence of a long term contract (to about 2011), British newspaper The Times said there is now 'a raft of speculation' hinting at a future link between Hamilton and F1's famous Italian team.

"Paddock wags (are) suggesting that his route to Ferrari is already being 'lawyered', on the assumption that Kimi Raikkonen is shown the door," motor racing correspondent Edward Gorman wrote.

Gorman added that Hamilton's annual salary could potentially rise from about $500,000 in 2007 to up to $40m 'or more' with Ferrari.

The rumour is backed by another British newspaper - the Daily Mail - and its claim that Hamilton was unashamedly 'angry' in Monaco when it became clear that he was being asked to sacrifice his lead of the drivers' championship and settle for second.

That would be interesting...

Wouldn't surprise me if Kimi didn't stay at Ferrari too long but replaced by Hamilton? Dunno.

Hamilton turning his back on his mentor, the one who stood beside him throughout his career in Motorsport...it would be a right move in the end.:P

To be fair $2m contract buy out wouldn't be alot if Ferrari were offering LH $40m a year anyway!

LOL..$500,000 to $40 million. Isn't that a lot?

Hamilton may be good but it doesn't mean Ferrari will sign him and increase his salary by 80 times!!!

These are rumours are now turning into humours. :P

The press go to a lot more trouble making up stories than reporting real stories these days. All this is just fallout from after the Big Ron issue.

One thing we can all agree on is that LH is grossly under paid. I hope the salary of $.5M is not correct. Testing showed them he had the speed when he beat out De la Rosa for the seat. So I would think he is being paid more than that. Hell Pedro makes more than that as test driver!
I also bet he gets bonus bucks for every point scored.

The idea of Ferrari giving up on Kimi this early is ridiculous  Kimi is .1 faster than anyone else. All he lacks is an interest in car development and the occasional lapse in attention. I think LH is a McLaren guy thru and thru. And nothing brings a smile to a maca man like beating the shxt out of the red cars!

Thats what people thought when Kimi was new. But he did not get the treatment at McLaren. Hamilton might be getting the treatment but I think he deserves more and Ferrari can provide him with that.(If at all a transfer takes place :P)

Look, LH is getting so much more then 500k, he's getting recognition and profile that previously he could only have dreamed of...

For every good result his pay goes up a million...

Some other team will buy him out of a contract or he will stamp his foot and get the $$$ from Mclaren...

All these drivers start out idealistic and full of morals, but the greed catches all of them and at the end of the day driver moves boil down to one thing...

Money...
