Alonso won 2 races which came down to luck,while Ferrari and McLaren were in the pressure cooker of the title fight Renault were not! sure in the last 6 races alonso might habe scored more but why not include the last 7, 8 or even the last 9 races? There in lies what's important and at the end of the day who was the best driver over the whole season, the one with the most points!

You can't have it both ways: either you go with the most points/championships to decide who's the best driver (LH this season and MS in all of F1 history) or you factor in other qualities as well to come to a more differentiated picture (AS and MS, e.g., or as FB just did a comparison between FA and MS and I'd say in both cases MS comes out on top). Isn't that usually your line of reasoning when claiming AS's superiority?!?

Well said!! (Well except I think AS is better than MS) I think Hammy was better than Alonso in 07, but not in 08.

Lewis Hamilton is a farse. He doesn't deserve to be World Champion and only won by sheer luck. Alonso didn't win his 2 titles by luck nor the 2 races he won in an inferior car in 2008. Lewis Hamilton would of won nothing had he not driven for a team like McLaren or Ferrari for that matter. Alonso proved otherwise. Yes we Italians are correct to state that Alonso was the best driver of 2008.

Dobro oops in English I mean Good. And incase you misheard, I will say it again. Lewis Hamilton is a farse. He is crap. Alonso is better. The ITALIAN media are 100 percent correct and unbiased as Alonso is not Italian and they voted him number one. Now I have a second half off football to watch, A-League Queensland versus Wellington to watch and then a nap as later big games are on. Newcastle Versus Liverpool followed by Fullham versus Chelsea. I love holidays because holidays equals football, plus more football plus even more football....... and that is real football by the way Bud. Real like ALonso is a really good driver and Lewis Hamilton isn't.

What she is trying to say is that you "rubbish" this ranking because 'statistically' Hamilton was the best driver of the season. Yet when we talk about 'who is the best F1 driver' someone always says that Schumacher is the best driver ever because statistically he had most wins, most titles, etc. And you come along claiming stats dont matter its 'how good you were' and 'his opposition' and he had an inferior car unlike Schuey who had the best in the field by miles, yet here we are talking about best driver of the season and you are going against your arguement that you use to defend Senna as the best F1 driver. THATS what DD is saying, but of course we dont know anything and your opinion is always right.

Gee AKR tell us how you really feel, Alonso is a sulking primadonna who had the capability of going down as one of the greats but instead decided to throw his toys out of the cot when he was at Mclaren.
There were a few times during the year when he gave up during a GP if things wernt going his way, and really his wins were down to luck and bad decsions from other teams as opposed to him showing off any real skill.
I dont think Lewis was the driver of the year, Massa did a solid job most of the year but really drivers like Kubica and Glock deserve a lot of praise for their efforts.

oh and AKR im sure if Lewis was in the red car you would be salavating over him so called 'fans' such as yourself can really take the shine of the discussions here at times

And unlike your British papers/press that are so biased towards their own Lewis Hamilton, ie Auto Sport, Alonso is not Italian so thus the assessment is not biased. Alonso is the best driver and had he driven for Ferrari, then he would be world champion. In 2007, I wouldn't really say that Lewis Hamilton winning over Alonso on equal points is anything to rave about, plus McLaren always gave Lewis Hamilton the better treatment. And don't worry I read that book, "Lewis Hamilton, My Story". Lewis Hamilton sure talks up a lot of shiit in it. I bet if Alonso wrote a book about his 2007 McLaren experience a complete different and more accurate story would emerge.

Actually, Alonso's win in singapore was pure luck. He just randomly happened to be on the perfect strategy strategy. That race turned out to be a complete lottery in the end. Fuji on the other hand, he drove a fantastic race, but still, there was the help factor of Massa and Lewis being sent to the back of the field, a lazy Kimi, and a Heikki with a broken car.
All the same, its the fact that Alonso always got the best out of the car, and didn't make stupid mistakes, that brought him those wins, and he deserved them for those reasons.

The only bad races Alonso really had were Monaco and Canada. Where as the two fighting for the championship were tripping over each other constantly. Personally I think Vettel deserves to be at the top though. But thats just me. Many people find it hard to appoint a driver in a mid field car, driver of the year, over a world champion.

You make your own luck in Formula One.
Sure in Japan Alonso was helped by the first corner antics, BUT he still had to put in a hell of stint to beat Raikkonen and Kubica during the pitstop. Thats making your own luck.

I don't rank the drivers, but If I did, i'd say it would be foolish to not mention Kubica.
