From autosport.com:

Bernie Ecclestone has rejected team owner Vijay Mallya's claim that an Indian driver is not yet ready for Formula One.

Indian billionaire Mallya, who owns and runs Force India, wants a countryman at the wheel of his car but for the moment has ruled out both Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.

He said that Karthikeyan, who raced with the Silverstone based team (then Jordan) in 2005, 'doesn't fit' his criteria, while Chandhok did not sufficiently impress this year in GP2.

But F1 chief executive Ecclestone, who plans to add India to the Grand Prix calendar in 2011, disagrees.

"The time is getting closer for F1 to be in India, which is something I am really enthusiastic about, and hopefully Karun will be part of it," the 78-year-old told the local Hindustan Times. "His place is in F1."

Chandhok finished the 2008 GP2 series in tenth position. Karthikeyan, who as recently as last year was a test driver with Williams, was not mentioned by Ecclestone.

Typical Ecclestone - interfering in a place he has no business - to boost his cash flow.

Chandok showed glimpses of promise last season in Gp2, but not enough to ever warrant an F1 driver let alone a testing seat.

If Bernie's so keen on him, why doesn't he revive the Brabham team and make him his number 1 driver?

Excellent choice there too, the last Leyton House car designed by Newey before going to Williams.

unless Bernie wants a bigger market in a certain country. How long until there is a Shiek in a car, because he has no skill but a few billion in the bank

Its his series, I guess he can do or say whatever he wants. Damn the fans. (I need a smilie that is stroking off) Not to wish anything bad on anyone, but he could certainly slip in the tub... (RD)

Well, he wasn't a Sheik but we did have Pedro Diniz in the 'rich but literally talentless' role before...

This thread should be "Ecclestone keen on more money to support his divorce settlement"

Chandhok, he shows less promise than Buemi, and Buemi really doesn't deserve a seat. I mean, what about Grosjean or Maldonado. Those are the 2 drivers in GP2 who show real promise. Both are real racers and have shown they can fight for wins and make them happen. Both are also a good age. But not chandhok. The only thing hes got going is cash
