Would the medal system encourage punting from behind? I.e. driver X is ahead of driver Y, and if driver X wins the gold medal, driver X can no longer catch up. So driver Y has to overtake, or punt, to stay in the championship. The medal system might not just encourage "exciting" moves, but encourage downright reckless moves.

True. And then cue debates about causation of avoidable crashes!

No - teams would still get the same number of points for 1-8th finishes.

Yes, I could easily imagine the FIA simply saying that the result of the vote was whatever they wanted. Does anything think the FIA isn't corrupt enough to do this?

If they want to fix it somehow to make it look like the public want the medal system then they will easily rig it
