Senna & Prost were both oppertunists too. If you want to be the best driver, you have to be in the best teams. Simple as that. You would be a fool to not recognise Ferrari and Mclaren are the greatest teams in F1.

Surely Fangio was the greatest opportunist ever.

I don't mean opportunist with a negative connotation. It can't be denied that he had an eye for the winning team.

I'm entirely unsurprised. Banco Santander only went to McLaren for Fernando and since his move to Ferrari is more or less a done deal (Although a "secret" one), it makes sense for them to ink a deal with his likely team for once the McMerc deal is concluded

what the really?

The rules in that era are so different from the current F1 rule's that they are irrelevant.

I think you'll find that the basic concept of changing teams having spotted which team is likely to dominate in the next few years is pretty much the same as it ever was.

Yes sir I doubt that concept has changed one bit.

Since Santander switched to Ferrari it isn't exactly surprising to see a more definate picture of Alonso going to Ferrari, this article says that apparently, he'll be moving there in 2011.

Alonso to join Ferrari in 2011 - report
Eurosport - Sun, 28 Dec 11:05:00 2008

Fernando Alonso has a secret agreement to join Ferrari for four years from 2011, according to Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The twice Formula One world champion has never hidden his desire to go to the Italian team and Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo recently fuelled the ongoing speculation by refusing to rule out the Spaniard's future arrival.

The newspaper said the deal had several get-out clauses for both sides but added that Alonso could join Ferrari even earlier, in 2010, if 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen follows this year's disappointing season with another bad campaign.

By contrast, Alonso was in impressive form after returning to Renault following a difficult season at McLaren, despite not having a car competitive enough to challenge for the title.

The 27-year-old won two races, in Singapore and Japan, and finished fifth in the standings for Renault, with whom he won the 2005 and 2006 world championships.

Ferrari have Raikkonen and this year's title runner-up Felipe Massa under contract until the end of 2010, while Alonso's current deal with Renault also runs for two more seasons.

A Ferrari spokesman would not comment on the reports, apart from saying: "We can only repeat that we have two drivers signed to the end of 2010".

Well you know nothing is secure at Renault, and it probably will happen.
Oh well. Nobody knows what will happen in 2 years. Heck the internet may have imploded by then.

[McLaren Fan]

Well, this isn't a surprise. Alonso is only biding his time at Renault and the team's medium and long-term future in Formula One has a few question marks beside it.
