i fear renault will go, theyve said it even before this, and it seems standard engines are really being pushed too,

either one of them will finish it off for me

looks like this really could be the begining of the end for many fans

well with times like they are it is hard for companies to justify this level of non essential spending

I feel the same buddy. With Honda/Jenson out, but the Beeb back in, I'm just about happy to stick around. But the way things are going and with Renault (Who are my new favourite team since UNNAMED haven't a hope in hell of racing) eying a departure in the relatively near future...I'm not sure I like what the sport is becoming.

They are more successful there than in Formula One and, I would imagine, they spend less on those.

To the people thinking Renault might be next, I disagree. They're on a high from the end of 2008, Alonso is staying with them and they're confident that they can be at the front next year. Even if their car is a couple of tenths off the big two, Alonso has shown that he could win a championship in that kind of car. Williams and Toro Rosso seem likely to be the next, unless their performance increases significantly. Force India, with their new technical partnership, could be saved.


Also, people seem happy about the statement about engines today, in particular allowing teams to use their own current engines. However, they would still have to use a standardised transmission, so I feel that Mad Max is, at least in part, getting his own way there... :/

I thought the engines had to be built on the cosworth design....
This is a very bad day for F1- Next year i think we will see one of the smallest grids ever, I think Bernie has to Wise up and stop milking the Dryed up cash cow that formula one was and make the sport sustainable for Teams and Curciuts

Mad Max sent out a letter today listing three options.

Option 1 - Use a pre-built Cosworth engine with XR transmission.
Option 2 - Build your engine to the exact specification of the Cosworth engine and run it with XR transmission.
Option 3 - Continue using your current engine, under the engine freeze rules, which will maintain a level of parity with the Cosworth standard engine as the benchmark. Again, XR transmission, rather than the teams' own, is used.

it's a bad day for F1...but it's a worse day for the 800 people who have just been told their job may not exist after Christmas, lets not forget them in all this discussion on where F1 should be going. back a few years, well more than a few, the grids fell to 16/18 cars, and it may be that is where its going now.

time for the manufacturers to move on, they have helped to make F1 the global sport it now is but also made it the expensive sport it is, with £200/£300 million budgets for mid field teams, that is unsustainable in this present financial climate. With car makers laying off workers, it doesn't look good throwing that sort of money at a race car team

that said, i hope no more teams quit, i've been following F1 on and off since 1966 and i would like to continue, but this may just be the wake up call thats been coming. F1 teams, sit up and take notice, things are changing

F1 was a 100 Million dollar black hole compared to the others, infact in Indy car the teams pay them for their engines.

That is true. Also If Honda left the IRL they would have lose a large marketing oportunity.
They are in the ALMs next year and continue in MOTOGP. What does that tell you? Mainly that they can still afford this, whereas F1 they surely couldn't

Top story in most places. Probably leads on from the crisis of the American car manufacturers yesterday. Terrible state of affairs indeed.

The question I've been asking myself today:

In MotoGP Honda have a massive long term sponsor in Repsol.
In World Super Bike Honda have a big sponsor in Handspree. The only 3 bike team WSBK, plus 2 bikes in World Super Sport. All Hanspree.
They have no problem getting sponsors being a very reputable firm.
Why oh why didn't they get a sponsor for the F1 team???

Even if it only paid for half or less. They would still be around.
