Organisers of the Australian Grand Prix have been told to stage a night race next year or forego a contract extension after the event in 2010.

The Adelaide newspaper Sunday Mail will on Sunday quote F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone as warning that only a floodlit race held after 9pm at Albert Park next March may be enough to satisfy the sport's officialdom.

"Unless they (organisers) can come up with something that's going to satisfy us I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be able to continue there," he said, not long after inking a deal with Singapore for the first ever night race in 2008.

The news is just the latest instalment in the flagging fortunes of the Melbourne race, which has suffered growing losses and declining crowd numbers and local sponsorship in recent years.

Me thinks his initials stand for Bloody Evil

I think its bullpoo that the southern hemisphere races should exist to suit European/NA time slots. I know F1s all about the tv money but what is this s***!

anyways send it back to Adelaide we had a lemans race on our street circuit so locals arent too big an issue with noise and lighting well just give every race goer a torch to shine on the track. problem solved

Woo-Hoo, night races FTW.

That said, I'd rather be rid of Melbourne, or at least get it moved on the calendar

I am so sick of Bernie Ecclestone screwing around with F1! You know what would increase television audiences? By giving the audience what they want, not just what makes money!

A return to Adelaide perhaps? Always the perfect season finisher. :D

Yeah, like BE in his open casket going round the Nordschleife in a horse-drawn carriage with a big wooden stake driven through his shriveled-up heart. Now THAT would get the TV rates go through the roof I'm sure

gets my vote but i hear Queensland wants a Tilke designed motorsport park built inbetween the Gold Coast and Brisbane to cator for all forms of motorsport, and lure the GP there.

On the contrary, the partying and dancing in the world would continue throughout the night and people not following F1 would be first puzzled and then join the party.
