From Grand Prix.com:

The company Lagardere Sports and Disneyland Paris have abandoned their project to hold the French Grand Prix, saying that the event is not economically viable. The plan was for a race in 2010 but it seems that the local government was not willing to come up with the funding because of fears that the local population would object to the event. This means that there is not going to be a French Grand Prix in either 2009 or 2010.

The project was headed by former world champion Alain Prost and was one of the six that were in competition for the event. The deal was for Lagardere to come up with around $80m in finance with Disney providing the land.

The latest rumours suggest that the project that will now become the favourite is the one in departement of the Yvelines, to the west of Paris, in the valley of the River Seine, at Flins. This is understood to have the support of French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

From F1 Live:

Another potential site for a future French Grand Prix near Paris has reiterated its bid for the F1 race.

It emerged this week that the prospective organisers of an event on the grounds of Disneyland Paris, about a half hour drive from the capital, had scrapped their plans.

But a site at Sarcelles, a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, had earlier this year been put forward as an alternate potential venue for the French Grand Prix, given the demise of the Magny Cours race.

In an official statement, the team behind the Sarcelles project said the plans can still be enacted.

It is believed a more likely start-date, however, would be 2011, meaning that France could be unrepresented on the F1 calendar for at least the next two years.

The Sarcelles statement also encouraged Lagardere, the potential promoter of the failed Disneyland bid, to 'join in' the alternate efforts to bring Formula One to Paris.

Well, regardless of whether it's Disneyland, Sarcelles or wherever, Formula One can't be taken seriously as Formula One without a French Grand Prix.

Just as long as the track's nothing like Magny-Bores or anything conjured up on the end of Herman Tilke's pencil I'll be happy.

I'd like so see somebody design a French track based on or similar to the old Dijon track last used 26 years ago.
