Jenson Button has claimed that had he been at McLaren-Mercedes this year, he would have been Formula 1 World Champion rather than Lewis Hamilton – and suggested that the sport's new youngest-ever title-winner would not have done as well as he did in the under-performing Honda.

Button notched up just three points in 2008 courtesy of a sole sixth place in the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona – eight points fewer than the tally registered by team-mate Rubens Barrichello, and his worst total since his sophomore campaign in the top flight back in 2001.

Despite that, the 28-year-old – whose mantle as top British driver was stolen by Hamilton last year – is adamant his Stevenage rival would have done no better.

“Lewis is a worthy world champion,” Button told Sunday UK newspaper The People, “but he wouldn't have done as well as me in my Honda.

“I mean, the guy has never been in a bad car. I think you learn from it and become a better driver trying to work with a bad car.”

Only the Force India and Super Aguri F1 drivers ended the 2008 season lower in the standings than Button, but the Frome-born ace – whose sole grand prix victory came at Budapest in Hungary two years ago – is adamant he too could be in Hamilton's position right now.

“If I'd had Lewis Hamilton's car then I'd have been world champion too,” he stated

Jenson Button. Now he is Brit I would like to see do well. Honda are shiit. If Button had had a McLaren or Ferrari, he could easily of challenged for World Champion. Button is good. I remember when he won that race for then BAR-Honda. The car was not bad and Button delivered, even against the might of back then Ferrari, Renault, Williams and McLaren. Screw Lewis Hamilton. If Britain wants to win, have a real Brit that doesn't have a big mouth called Jenson Button win.

Yes but Ralf was clearly shiit. He only got his seat in F1 because of his brother. He had his chance. He raced for Williams when they were good and did nothing. Jenson Button has never had that chance. Not yet anyway.

Williams is not any better than Honda right now so I don't see how going to Williams would of made a difference for him.

Jensen has just come across as a big headed sore loser in that article. Fair dues, he has had a bad car but surely a really, really good driver gets good finishes despite having a bad car? I mean it's ok for him to say that Hamilton wouldn't have done as well as Button did if Hamilton was in Buttons car...but I can guarantee you that Schumacher would've done loads better than Button did.

Honda were doing well and coming of age in 2006 until they sacked Geoff Willis, that's where the huge downfall started in 2007.

Are you referring to Ralf or Button? If it's Ralf then that's spot on, but if it's Button, he was only drafted into the Williams seat for that 1 year anyway because Williams couldn't get Montoya in until 2001. Therefore he was given his debut as a sort of "filler", but he was quite lucky to get that seat as Sir Frank almost went with Bruno Junqueira.

But what Button did changing his mind on going back to Williams was stupid, he might have been able to save the faltering partnership with BMW and unlike when Hamilton wanted a Williams drive, Dr Theissen wasn't getting in the way of Button or even Davidson. And I'm not too sure Sir Frank will even want to consider hiring Button in the near future again, but he did make quite a bit of money from Button buying out his contract.

Yeh but when he got in in 2000 he had the shoot out between Bruno Junqueria and he got the seat now he did alright in sometimes in 2000 (spa for example) and the car wasn't the best but he was slower than Ralf as much as 4 seconds in some places.

The thing is he d*cked about too much he bought a massive yacht and decided to live the playboy lifestyle which is all well and good if your winning but he was going to loose that seat and if he was more committed in 2000 he might of kept it.

With the MP4-23? Yep, he probably could've done it. No issues so far.

But could he say for sure that Hamilton wouldn't have scored more than three points in the RA108? Doubtful. The whole reason that Button struggled this season was the same reason that Heidfeld struggled: tyres. Both of them have smooth driving styles, which means they don't naturally put as much ehat in to their tyres like their team-mates Kubica and Barrichello do. Hamilton has no issue generating heat in his tyres (just enough to destroy them! ) so he probably would've scored more than Jenson.

But would he have kept the motivation up throughout the season?

Williams is not any better than Honda right now so I don't see how going to Williams would of made a difference for him.

Yeh but in 2001 the Williams was a good car Ralf came 4th in it and he won 4 races 3 with R. Schui and 1 with JPM now if had showed more commitment too the team rather than thinking "I'm a F1 driver now, this is great I'm going to buy a f*ck of Boat" he might of been able to convince Sir Frank he was worth a second season.

He is definitely no Lewis Hamilton though.

Example,

Look at 2001 when he went to Benetton Kimi joins Sauber and hes getting solid points finishes and ends 10th and Jensons team mate Fisi is behind Kimi (11th) getting some points finishes and a 3rd place.

But all Button manages is a 5th. and he ends the season 17th

what a stupid thing to say, IF EVERYONE had a good car they would all be in the running for wdc .

1. you dont become a worthy championship winning driver over night, as much as i like the guy button is simply not that, no matter what car hes in frankly.
2. i think jensen has forgotten about the other 8 of so people who would definatly be in the running with a maclaren or ferrari under them.
3. both ferrari drivers and kovalinen didnt win, ( could have been both maclaren drivers ) yet he thinks he can beat them ? was he drunk ?
