The Ferrari's new engine cover reminds me of some of the shapes of the engine covers from the early post-turbo era in 1989.

They had cars with no airbox at all:

And cars with the most unflattering vertical protuberance imagineable:

I believe the turbo cars didnt use airboxes primarily because the 1.5L v6 engines were much smaller than the V12 engines and the Cosworth DFV's of previous years. Williams put an airbox on their FW12 because they'd reverted to using a normally aspirated Judd V8 after losing their Honda turbo engines.

As for cars with ugly huge airboxes, check out this 1976 Ligier JS5 as driven by Jacques Laffitte. :P

Well it was because the turbos had no use for any velocity forced induction and so aero considerations in that part of the car could then be put on the front burner. Although if they kept turbos longer they would eventaully have faired the rear deck up to the helmet I'm sure.

theres no point to do that for a turbo! perks of forced induction!

Seems moot (for now):
Alonso did not offer promising feedback after using the wing - now painted red after originally appearing in carbon-fibre black - on the Barcelona layout.

"The extravagant and revolutionary front innovation did not work as the team had expected," the report added.

Alonso was fifth quickest in the MP4-22 on Wednesday; a full second off the pace of the dominant Ferrari steered by Felipe Massa.

I think one of the attractions of having a wing like that there is more room for sponsors. Not surprising, since the McLaren drivers look like billboards.

it actually gets in the way of the vodafone logo if anything, they painted it red there wont be any logos on there in spain i rekn! they made it as an evolution to what Renault started and since Williams Ferrari etc have followed, this just goes over the top so to speak ;)

Hm, Barcelona could well be the end of it all:

It is suggested that some unnamed teams have already asked FIA observers to keep a close eye on the behaviour of McLaren's 'bridge' wing via on-board cameras as the Barcelona event progresses later this week.

not at all, they would just need to put a strut on it, not unlike Ferrari last year.

i think you should read the FIA plans on all winglet devices could be back to clean bodywork
