It may sound strange, but yesterday was the start of the GP2 championship. The field contained around 12 rookies, so of course, there was indeed a safety car period.

Now as per usual, safety car means the pit lane is closed, but it didn't close during this race. In fact, even the commentators were surprised. But yes, the pit lane remained open just like the old rules.
Personally, I don't even know why they started closing the pit lane, it's a stupid rule which has lost drivers races.

But it will be interesting to see if they start leaving the pit lane open again in F1

Because Alonso charged impetuously around to make use of the pit lane facilities and caused a crash.

I watched that, first GP2 race I've watched in a while. The safety car thing was handled horribly. Took far too long to sort a simple spinner out and get back to racing.

The 'safety car' rules in F1 and GP2 need's a major overhauling I think.

I agree but there are not many options as to what it could be changed to.
