Years ago the technolagy used in motor racing was the first step to advarnce car preformance for the publc, now adays it is of more use to the flight industry.

Yeah, but F1 views itself and has always viewed itself as the pinnacle of motorsports. It's always been about technical innovation and development. The FIA is already taking a lot away in the next years (standard ECU, engine freeze, etc., etc.). I really don't want to see it become a formula for totally standardized cars and I really hope that MM's ideas about a green formula with complete freedom as to how to achieve that goal will be implemented. Less restrictions and more innovations to reduce fuel consumption.

unfortunately I don't think F1 plays as big a part in future vehicle technology as it used to. Mercedes alone spend £1m per hour on R&D for their road cars, and as I understand it they aren't the top spenders by a long shot.

I'm with you on the standardised cars though, not a good thing. Although if it does go that way then a clutch and gearbox could be a good way to separate the drivers, with more driver skill!

And why is that so? Because F1 missed the train. Finally, they woke up and stopped squabbling between FIA and constructors (remember? Years and years wasted!). Now, with the green initiative hopefully getting implemented, F1 may well become a hotbed of innovation again - which it should be.

I just think that where being green in concerned, the actual technical development is faster for road-going cars. But if F1 wants to go green there is one simple answer, go carbon neutral. If the manufacturers put money into renewable sources that offset CO2 emissions created by the team, then they will be 100% green. After-all there is a world rally team doing the same thing and I personally think the idea is brilliant.

F1 already is carbon neutral. The FIA already plants enough trees each year to ensure this. Well, according to Formula1.com

What i want to know tho, is it just the race meeting that are carbon neutral? Or does it cover all the testing, and flights and stuff like that?

Welshie, apparently yes it does cover testing and flights.

The FIA have already made Formula 1 a 'carbon-neutral' sport. Since 1995, they have carefully calculated the amount of carbon produced by F1 cars during racing and testing, as well as by their transport and the air travel involved in the sport.

Of course this only goes so far, not using so much fuel in the first place would make a much larger difference than just planting a few trees to counter the effect of the fuel being burnt. The first and easiest step? Stop the 'fuel burn' section of Q3!

It's not carbon-neutral, just think of how much carbon the spectators/media generare each time they come to a GP!
