To be honest, the rear wings for next season do look a little bit odd. Also, as they are smaller, some sponsors will not be happy, which, for a team like Williams, is hardly a good thing. A simpler, more aesthetically pleasing solution that will also keep the sponsors happy is simply banning rear-wing endplates, reducing their size, or having single-decked rear wings. The FIA always have to over-complicate the issue.

Endplates are prime sponsor surfaces...

True. I should have elaborated on things more. It's getting near my bedtime. :hehe:

In looking at some images of cars, I don't think that getting rid of the endplates would be such a bad thing for team's sponsorship income, for the the additional space is being used for various aerodynamic holes to enhance the performance of the rear wing. Between that and reducing the size of the wing, I'd say seriously reducing the size of the endplates is the way to go.

Edit: and having a single-deck rear wing.

The rear spoiler is too narrow. Looks odd.........................

i think it will look fine when there is a grid of 20+ (hopefully) cars in Melbourne, ill wait till we see the cars in ful 09 spec with slicks etc before passing judgement altho at the end of the day what they look like isnt so much of a concern to me - i can live with anything if the cars can slipstream properly again

The look of a 2009 specs car........... I think

Image

Cool.
A few questions:
Is the shark fin going to be mandatory now or just optional?
Who made this image / where did it come from?
Would they be able to fit the KERS battery in there?

The Williams photos look weird but of course thats not what next years cars will look like.
The CG model looks pretty ace in my opinion, looks more streamlined.

An interesting idea came to me earlier when I was thinking about reducing the importance of aerodynamic grip in Formula One. What about attaching the rear wings to the car's suspension? This was banned more or less as soon as it was introduced in the 1960s on safety grounds, but surely the technology and safety standards exist now to allow such a thing?

I think the shark fin is banned, and also the only other thing slightly innacurate in that picture is that the car is still narrow but they will be wider again next year like they were back in 1997 which was 2 metres.

Found above image here http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2008/09/18/2009-f1-rules-make-rear-wings-tiny/ and also here http://www.f1wolf.com/2008/08/2009-formula-1-cars-look-the-most-obvious-differences.html

Here is a photoshop I found of what the Ferrari will look like.
I hope not :yikes:

Report: 2009 F1 cars designed to promote overtaking
http://www.motorauthority.com/report-2009-f1-cars-designed-to-promote-overtaking.html
Detailed computer simulations of next year's sweeping aerodynamic bodywork changes predict that the new rules will lead to more overtaking. After November's season ending Brazilian grand prix, the formula one cars of 2009 will look considerably different; smaller wings and no winglets or bodywork appendages.

Also to be altered radically is the rear diffuser, which can take a lot of the blame for processional races like last Sunday's European grand prix at Valencia.

"The Toyota is particularly bad," Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. "You cannot get closer than about one second behind," the German explained.

The report also said McLaren test drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett, at the wheel of the state of the art facility at Woking, were "thrilled" with the exploration of simulated overtaking possibilities for 2009.

Another mock up without the car being widened. If you widened it it would look more like the F310B from 1997 or even that Ferrari A1GP car.

just checking out the regs on the FIA website it says the cars are to have an overall width of 1800mm for 2009 which is what they currently are! i thought they were going wider as 7up said to 2000mm??

I just had another look and it says it may not be less than 1980mm and no more than 2000mm in section 3.3.

EDIT: Actually something must be wrong, because I just went to the said FIA regulations and it says 1800mm there but in another set I've found on google it says 2000mm....

Something is not right....... :eek::confused:

If it's true then excuse me... :banghead:

I was looking forward to wider cars and now that isn't going to happen!!! DAMN YOU MAD STUPID MAX!! You could always tell that whilst slicks were coming back there was something else that he wouldn't give us back, wider cars!! :banghead::banghead:

its only 20cm does that make a difference? ladies???? :hehe:

It probably would. It would punch an even bigger hole in the air and allow an even better opportunity for overtaking. That was one of the key areas that Autosport magazine incovered after the 1999 Spanish GP. And it would make the cars look more badass, I've not been fond of these "skinny" cars since 1998.
