From F1 Live:

The trophies presented to Monza winner Sebastian Vettel and his podium cohorts seem to have contravened the 2008 Formula One sporting regulations.

Many pundits were surprised after the Italian Grand Prix, when instead of being handed traditional trophies, Vettel and his peers held aloft silvered prizes in the shape of the logo of the race's title sponsor, Banco Santander.

While acknowledging the importance of sponsors, Sheiban Shakeri, a blogger at the popular sports site Bleacher Report, wrote: "Come on, shaping your trophies to that company's logo? I think that's pushing into the sacred."

Indeed, upon inspection of the 2008 sporting regulations, the FIA requires Grand Prix promoters to present trophies "in the form of traditional cups."

The blogger said he believes sports sponsorships and some of F1's older traditions can live together, underlining that trophies are generally considered as a work of art in themselves "from the crystal vase in Montreal to the silver steering wheel in Budapest."

Referring to the logo-shaped Monza trophy, Shakeri wrote: "I still know of this bank's existence, I still know of the services they offer, and I still know what the logo looks like because it's pasted everywhere during the race broadcasts."

"Logos are fine, but please let the trophies be trophies."

I completely agree. Give the drivers the proper, genuine Italian Grand Prix trophy please. :director:

I noticed this, but didn't feel like it was the first time i had noticed it. Have we had trophies shaped like that before?
It didn't seem to bother Vettle at the time, he was delighted to get it.

I noticed that. Commercialisation is quite disgusting actually.

Erm this isnt the only race that Santander has sponsored. Im sure Hamilton's British Gp trophy is in that shape too, and the one in Germany.
Don't they break the rules then?

I noticed this earlier in the season also but I thought I remembered it being only the 2nd and 3rd place trophies that were the logo-shape in those previous races while the winners was more traditional for the race. This time of course they all were the logo, I noticed it and it stinks!

And here's Rubens at Silverstone where Lewis got the great looking gold British GP trophy but 2nd and 3rd got these

I thought the trophies presented at the weekend looked familiar. Now I know why. What a disgrace.

Well, to be honest, I'd rather have a shiny silver Santander logo than the Hungarian GP trophies :/

They probably styled it on a Ming vase. No wonder it's "minging". :)

I'll get me coat. ;):D

I think the Santander shaped "trophies" are a bit ridiculous, it's meant to be a trophy, not an "award for the biggest whatever", they should just shape them like proper trohpies. The best non trophy "trophy" (if you can call it that) is the Jack Brabham "steering wheel" trophy that's used for the Australian Grand Prix.

My outlook even though you dont want to hear it is 'Who give's a flying shag about how the trophie's look'?
