WHEN LEWIS HAMILTON first clapped eyes on PUSSYCAT DOLL singer NICOLE SCHERZINGER, he mouthed: “She’s so hot, isn’t she.”
The Brit Formula One ace was mesmerized by Nicole’s sultry looks as she cavorted on stage at last year’s MTV awards.
It led to a backstage meeting between the singer and the multi-millionaire driver who has brought the glamour back to the F1 pit lane.
Lewis, 23, told an interviewer at the MTV bash in Munich: “She’s beautiful. Can you feel the heat, man?”
A whirlwind romance with dates across the globe followed — and now Nicole has even written a song for the speed ace called I Think I’m In Love.
Few would argue with Lewis’s breathless description.
But The Sun today reveals the pictures that show she was an achingly shy and awkward Catholic schoolgirl who couldn’t get a boyfriend.
Now famous for her sexy stage routines and erotic outfits, our never-before-seen photos portray an innocent and fresh-faced youngster.
Nicole, 29, says: “Believe it or not, I used to be cripplingly shy. My grandfather was a preacher. I came from a very religious, strict upbringing in Hawaii and I wasn’t very popular. Guys just wouldn’t go out with me.”
Now she is dating one of the world’s most eligible bachelors . And last night Nicole’s mum Rosemary gave Lewis the green light to carry on dating her daughter.
Rosemary, a professional hula dancer, exclusively told The Sun: “Nicole has told us about Lewis and she really likes him.
“It’s hard because they both live so far away but I know they really enjoy each other’s company.
“We want to meet him but we haven’t had the chance yet with him being in the UK and her being in LA.”
Nicole inherited her exotic looks from Rosemary, from Hawaii, and her Filipino father.
Nicole’s mum says she never doubted her daughter would rise to stardom.
Speaking from her home in Hawaii, Rosemary added: “We always knew she had talent so we tried to encourage her.
“She’s a good girl and worked really hard to get where she’s at.”
Nicole, who was born on the Pacific island, moved to the US with her mother and stepfather Gary Scherzinger, who adopted the star after her mum split from her Filipino father when she was a baby.
When she moved away from the tropical island paradise with her family aged six, she found herself in a strange new school and having to make new friends.
As a teenager, Nicole started to focus on singing and acting with her local theatre group the Actors Theatre Of Louisville, in Kentucky, in the US Mid West.
Nicole said her love of music finally brought her out of herself.
She remembered: “It wasn’t until I got to high school that I began to blossom. Even though I was shy, uncomfortable and lanky, my music brought me out of myself.”
She went on to study at the exclusive Youth Performing Arts School at duPont Manual High School.
Our exclusive picture shows her first stage success in 1996, when she was the runner-up at the Kentucky State Fair’s Coca-Cola Talent Classic contest, aged just 17.
Dressed in a conservative blue outfit, Nicole looks a far cry from the umpalumpa kitten who now shares life in the fast lane with racing star Lewis.
Her friends remember her as shy and sweet but could never have imagined her transformation into a full-blown sex-kitten.
One schoolmate remembered: “Louisville is a very Catholic place — you could say it’s pretty conservative.
“She was always performing but she never did anything as risqué as she does now. I remember she was sweet and very pretty. All the teachers liked her and she was very popular.”
After Nicole left school she went on to win the US version of telly talent show Popstars and had brief success in the States with Eden’s Crush, the band that came out of the show.
The group disbanded in 2001 and Nicole auditioned for the Pussycat Dolls in 2003.
She revealed: “The first time I saw one of the stage outfits I had to wear for the Pussycat Dolls, I screamed. “Now I really love it.”
And so do her millions of male fans. Since joining the Dolls, Nicole has had a string of high-profile romances.
She became engaged to US rock singer Nick Hexum but the couple split after three years, citing difficulties with their schedules.
A source close to the couple said at the time: “They were very private and never spoke publicly about their relationship. Things came to a halt because they were spending so much time apart.
“Their relationship just kind of fizzled out.”
Nicole went on to have a fling with US reality TV star Talan Torriero — eight years her junior — after he split from former fiancée Kimberly Stewart.
Nicole said she ended the romance last year to focus on her solo career.
Then our boy Lewis came zooming into the picture.
And it seems their love was always meant to be.
Before her romance with the McLaren Mercedes driver was made public, she said: “I like nice men.
“The British have good manners and I always go for that in the end.”
