Doubts cast over Nurburgring GP future

By Jonathan Noble Friday, August 29th 2008, 16:48 GMT

Formula One racing at the Nurburgring could be a casualty if the FIA decides to strip the ADAC-controlled Deutscher Motor Sport Bund E.V. (DMSB) of its position as Germany's sporting authority at a meeting scheduled to take place on October 7.

Autosport.com has learned that the FIA's sporting authority in Germany is to be discussed at an extraordinary general meeting of the FIA in Paris in October, in the wake of ADAC's decision to withdraw from all involvement with the governing body earlier this year.

ADAC has been scathing of Mosley over his involvement in a umpalumpa scandal and, following his successful vote of confidence in June, the German automobile body said it would no longer cooperate with the FIA as long as Mosley remained in power.

It is understood that that action has now cast doubt on whether the DMSB will continue as Germany's national sporting authority.

A letter from Pierre de Coninck, Secretary General of the FIA (Sport) to members of the WMSC on Friday confirmed that 'the sporting power in Germany' was up for discussion in the meeting.

One possibility is for the WMSC to react to ADAC's stance and install the rival Automobil von Deutschland (AvD) as the German sporting authority instead. AvD owns Hockenheim and also the rights to the 'German Grand Prix' name.

DMSB's loss of power could make it more difficult for ADAC to continue holding the F1 race at Nurburgring, even though the track has an agreement at present to hold the German GP in alternate years to Hockenheim.

Also up for discussion at the WMSC meeting is the future commercial rights for the World Rally Championship, and the national sporting authority in India.

The other major item on the agenda is F1 rules from 2011, with the FIA sticking to its original October date for the discussion of new regulations it wants in place in three year's time.

Max Mosley wrote to the teams in July saying they had three months to come up with some proposals to cut costs and improve racing that could be turned into rules, or the FIA would prepare its own regulations instead.

Although teams have begun the formulation of the new Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA), it is understood there has been little progress so far in actually come up with concrete proposals for the future.

Discussions in Valencia last weekend included the possibility of more sharing of chassis parts, but there was not big support behind that idea.

There were some suggestions that the teams wanted to delay submitting their proposals until January.

I wouldn't call the "Newburgring" a classic circuit, but it's very decent despite that pointless new first corner Tilke put in which doesn't invite any overtaking what-so-ever. I suppose Bernie will be rubbing his hands in glee at this news as he prepares to enter talks with Borat about hosting a race in Khazakstan which both believe "would be very niiiiiice".

It's not just that, I mean it isn't good for the German Grand Prix, esp when Hockenheim's organisers can't afford tohold the race year in year out. What pisses me off is how the FIA have dumped the ADAC for expressing their opinions.
Guess that means the USA won't be getting a GP anytime soon :(

It makes you think Germany has lost its interest in F1 since Schumacher left which I think is rather foolish. Today you've got Vettel - Schumi's protege - Glock, Heidfeld, Rosberg, Sutil and even BMW's works team. Compare that to Schumacher in 1991 when the only German aside from him was Michael Bartels who was a pay driver for Lotus covering whilst Johnny Herbert was off competing in the Japanese F3000. And Bartels never even managed to qualify for a single race.

I think its time for Schumi to step up and keep F1 in Germany for a long time to come.

I think your right. I mean remember Schneider (touring car class or not) was bloody poor in F1.
Hockenheim did what Silverstone didn't. They have blown their budget updating the track, and havent got the punters in to pay it back. Sad really.
Least Nurburgring was better than new Hockenheim.

Also Tex, u sure that's Borat... I thought it was Mario Theissen lol

And there was also the lanky Christian Danners who fluked a 4th place at Phoenix 1989 driving a Rial. There was only about 6 cars running as well. Before Schumacher came along, the last big German prospect was Bellof.

Bellof was a real prospect - almost like Vettel is now.

Danner spent a lot of time in the GP Masters series slagging off Alan Jones for his poor fitness, but Jones being Jones came right back and him and said "The only time you've ever seen a podium is when walking past it.". :hehe:

Well, this was bound to happen. How are anybody speak out against Max Mosley, the FIA or Bernie Ecclestone. Once again, the FIA and Mosley have shown themselves to be a petty bunch of losers who are completely unfit to govern Formula One. If we do lose Nürburgring, the German Grand Prix will not be sustainable, for Formula One simply costs too much to hold the race on annually. There is some hope in that Ecclestone may start making overtures to the FIA to lessen ADAC's punishment, for he stands to lose money by not having a Grand Prix in Germany due to the massive automobile manufacturers in the country. If we do lose the German Grand Prix, I'm sure Ecclestone will have another cash-cow venue ready and waiting anyway. Instead of being stricken with disbelief that the sport may lose a country with a rich motorsports, Ecclestone will be furious to learn he may lose a few bob.

not gonna attr\ct any new 'fans' this way, more likely to alienate those we have already!

look at valencia, if you had never watchwed f1 before and saw this, how long would it have been begore you switched over?

compare this to the touring car or many other formulas?

FAIL

I am just getting incredibly annoyed with Max and Bernie as well why can't we have some decent people governing Formula One.

Well we've got to put up with Mad Max for another year, and Bernie won't easily give in and in just a few years he could potentially sign up races from just about every corner in Asia and kill off the European aspect of F1.
