- 25 Aug 08, 13:42#61707Yesterday's race did not live up to expectations, we all know that. I think, however, sniping at the venue is a little premature. It will get better over the next couple of years. They were still finishing off bits of it on Thursday so the race could be held! The track layout itself has to take some of the blame in that it basically means you need a good engine to do well at the circuit. This is where single-biggest problem comes in. If the guy in front of you is getting an extra 20 bhp from his engine compared to yours, you have no chance of catching him in the straight, so you will not be able to slipstream and then subsequently outbrake him! This is were Formula One needs to cut down its operating costs because the big boys are blowing so much money on research and development that the smaller teams could only dream about. Similar to this problem, and not a hell of a lot behind it in terms of significance, is Formula One's reliance on aerodynamic grip. As you know, the amount of turbulent air from the cars now makes it very difficult to close up on a car and overtake. Thankfully, this will be rectified to some degree next year. Finally, as I've said before, Formula One has never been famous for huge amounts of overtaking. Yes, the amount of it has decreased in recent times, but there was never as much as some people like to believe. Some get all misty eyed and dreamy when thinking about events fifteen years ago. For me, other reasons why the sport seems less interesting is the boring tracks that we have now that have forced older, more exciting tracks off the calendar and a complete lack of charisma from the drivers. The sport needs personalities who are prepared to open their mouths, not a load of spice boy yes men.
