He's the star of the tournament and all he's done is run for 2 minutes :D

i think Phelps takes that honour

No way jose. I don't think he can be held in the same acclaim. Winning 8 Gold Medals sure great. But look at what he won them in. Even Michael Johnson said "It's the equivalent of a standard 100m race, a skipping 100m race and a running back 100m". It's nearly impossible for U.Bolt to win 8 Golds. Usain Bolt has 2 WR's to his name. That's just due to his raw talent. Beating quality athletes such as Powell and Gay.

Phelps on the other hand broke 6/7 WR's. No doubt great. But look at the other contributing factors. The deep water which took off 1% off of the time. Then the new swimsuit in which Phelps admitted himself it took off 2% off the time. That 3% is substantial enough to break the WR. If he didn't have that 3% he would have only broken 2 WR's. Then there's the argument of competitors. The closest competitor to him was probably the Hungarian, the Japanese and Crocker (who gave a half-arsed attempt). All 3 of them were not relatively as hard as Powell and Gay to compete with.

He's a great athlete no doubt but he's not the star of the tournament. Just look at the roar of when his name is announced and how the Chinese react to him.

I agree Bolt is the man
Phelps is a close second but I think WR in the pool are a bit of a farce these days because of all the technology.
Should go back to swimming in budgie smugglers I reckon then the records will last a bit longer.

trying to compare swimming to running is stupid! and if you want to bring up the technology of the swim suits well what the hell do the runners wear on their feat? or was that some natural adaptation that made them great runners??
8 gold 7 world records = star of the games!

I agree. Whilst I think Bolt is an excellent athlete, a lot of people dont like his cockiness.

 That's pretty stupid thinking that wearing trainers considerably enhance the performance of a sprinter. They've been wearing trainers ever since the first Olympics. Does that magically put on take off 2 seconds off the time. The trainers Michael Johnson wore are practically the same as Usain Bolt's. So really don't bring technology into it.
Yeah it was pretty naive of me to compare running to swimming.
And about his "cockiness". Would you rather see a world champion who does s*** all "Raikkonen" or someone who entertains the audience "Senna or Schumi". He's a great personality just like greats such as Federer, Woods and Beckham. Just look at the wonders they did for their sports.

they do not run in trainers they wear running shoes that have spikes on them! i brought up the shoe aspect as some were suggesting swimming suit technology has enhanced their performance, when shoes are enhancers. unless they run bare foot and swimmers naked, technology is helping performance
and are you seriously suggesting that shoe development would not have advanced in a decade or two? the materials used would be lighter and stronger! thats like suggesting for example golf clubs havent changed or 20 years.... why would Nike and the such spend money on R&D i guess according to you they cannot perfect shoes anymore :banghead:

and i never brought up Bolts cockiness i dont see anything wrong with it! although i see he is more cocky than Lewis Hamilton yet Lewis cops alot of flack funny how people pick and choose... bloody pathetic

In 8 years I hardly think they're gonna develop trainers that swipe off 2 seconds off the time. Maybe 0.05/0.1 seconds off the time. But didn't I say "Practically the same". So you can really see in which sport, technology makes more of a difference. One that could shave off 3/4 seconds helping the athlete to break the WR or shaving off 0.5/0.6 seconds.

dude swimming technology is only really coming into play this last decade or so. Running shoes are a technology that helps humans run faster than they naturally would, just as the current swimming suits help humans swim faster than they naturally would.
Swimming is just catching up to running in the technology stakes  so dont be bringing Phelps accomplishments down what he did was an amazing feat and would be hard to beat in years to come!

I haven't brought down his accomplishments. I even said it they were a great feat. I'm just saying the guy was aided with technology. Even past swimmers bring up that fact. Both great guys and great athletes. You have your opinion I have mine.

 I never said Bolt wasn't aided by technology. I said that his enhancement was minor compared to Phelps. :D Fair play I agree trainers are technology that aids him but Phelps was aided far more significantly than Bolt.
