So, suddenly we have up to 22 teams to apply for 2008 F1. I remember the days when we were kinda worried we'd have enough cars to come up with a full grid of 20. BUT I also remember the olden days when the field was much bigger (high twenties, low thirties) and we had a prequali in which the minnows had to duke it out before admission to the real quali with the big boys. Also, there's no need to enter 2 cars per team - maybe some of the teams would like to run just one car. The argument goes that there are only 24 pits at the race tracks. So what? Have the prequali on Friday (which would be an attraction for the public rather than the lame Fridays we currently have to endure) and whittle it down to the 24 max. No need to exclude potential teams already now because of the numbers. Also, who knows whether or not such a chosen team might bail out in the meantime - makes it harder for the other candidates to get up to snuff in shorter time. At least the FIA should keep a couple of backup teams around.
What do you say?

No fewer than 22 potential F1 teams met the FIA's Friday deadline to enter the 2008 World Championship.

With the current eleven outfits certain to be among them, the official news means that eleven others - including Paul Stoddart's Minardi and David Richards' Prodrive - will duke it out for just one available slot. Ten, therefore, will miss out.

“All applicants have been invited to a meeting in London on April 10, 2006,” the FIA said in a statement.

Also among the additional eleven teams is almost certainly Craig Pollock, Jacques Villeneuve's manager and a founder of the BAR (now Honda) operation.

“If something will come out, something will come out,” the coy Scot told Speed TV.

Another prospective entry is probably McLaren's 'Direxiv'-funded b-team; likely to be a front-runner in the FIA's selection process as it would be based at the refurbished Woking factory.

The FIA will publish the 2008 field on April 28.

It's rare that I agree with RD:

Rather than go through some sort of intellectual selection process, however, McLaren Mercedes boss Ron Dennis thinks they should all be invited to simply show up and 'pre-qualify' for Grand Prix.

“(It will show) just how many take the pain of going home after Friday,” he told reporters at Albert Park.

You know that's a really good idea - perhaps even have two races too, those who qualify for F1 and those who don't. The top three from the losers race could then be included in the main race later that day? Just an idea, but it would certainly shake things up.

I would love to see more cars in F1 though. 8)

Especially since they have been trying to find some solution for the dull Fridays for a while now - there you go with a thing to spice up the weekend.
