I never actually saw the 2005 season when tyre changes had been banned (I had gone off F1 after the boring start to 2004 and hadn't got back into it until 2006). What was it like?

I'm starting to think it would be a good idea, and lots of people seem to agree, however a large number of them are also asking for another tyre-change ban, which I think would not work at all with a fuel-ban because of the amount that cars would have to carry.

Are they asking for both a tyre change ban and a refueling ban? Formula 1 must have pit stops in some form, either for tyres, fuel, or both.

Get it back to tyre stops... not mandatory tho and certainly not pit windows

Yeah, and make any tyre available, I don't like this "we're only bringing harder tyres" rubbish sometimes. I remember when there were about 4 different types of each compound, and some drivers would stick hard tyres on and try and go the whole distance without stopping. Being on fresh rubber used to allow you to close on drivers on worn rubber at the rate of seconds a lap, not a few tenths of a second a lap.

I wonder if the slicks will be softer than the current grooved tyres too? Slicks were so soft that locking up a wheel could be catastrophic - leaving a flat spot on your tyre - and when Coulthard locked up once at Hungary in 1998 - the first year of the grooves - Murray made a meal of it at first until Brundle mentioned that the grooved tyres were a harder compound.

Having seen some of the pictures of worn slicks, they certainly do seem to look more worn than the current grooved tyres would look.

The '05 season was one of the best in recent times imo, basically because the majority of the races were great to watch!

I agree. Qualifying was pretty awful but the race itself was pretty good - if frustrating from my point of view: McLaren turn up with the fastest car only for it break down in the race! :censored:

That and numerous suspension failures, one or two more tyre problems and several other technical issues. 2005, for me, will be remembered as the year McLaren threw it away. :(

If only I had noticed back then, I've seen some clips on Youtube and there were some classic moments such as Kimi's drive at Suzuka, starting well down the field, winning and passing Fisichella on the last lap at the same time.
