For the first time in its long history the Geneva International Motor Show, which opened last week, is playing host to a Chinese manufacturer. Brilliance, based in Shenyang, is looking to use the event as a springboard for cracking the Swiss and European markets. In the past few years, their cars were plagued by reliability issues. Up to 80 per cent of Chinese models were affected by more or less serious faults within the first six months. However, the newest Brilliance BS6 with a top speed of 195km/h relies on well-proven technology as far as the engine and the gearbox are concerned – a Mitsubishi engine and Mitsubishi gearbox – so there are no surprises.
The Chinese car manufacturer is getting a load of help and know-how from its strategic partner BMW. They're catching up more rapidly than the Japanese and Koreans did before them. In fact, BMW trusts them with manufacturing the 3 and 5 series BMW's exclusively for the Chinese market.
Ten years from now, we're going to see Brilliance cars on our streets like we see Hyundais today. Given BMW's racing tradition, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Brilliance name in F1 or some other series in some shape or form not too long from now...

According to the Chinese car importer Asie Auto:
China became the world's second-largest market for new vehicles in 2006 after the United States.
7.28 million vehicles were produced in 2006 (up 27.3% on the previous year), making China the third-largest producer in the world. Sales are predicted to grow by 15% to exceed 8 million units in 2007.
