An interesting qualifying session indeed. I was not surprised to see McLaren out pace Ferrari given that Silverstone does feature some areas where good mechanical grip is needed and McLaren's ferocious development pace. The MP4-23 look bolted to track in all sectors of the circuit. The Ferrari, however, looked a bit of a handful, with particularly bad power oversteer. I think Raikkonen will have a fair bit of fuel in his car, but I still think the McLarens would be faster even if that were not the case. Massa made a mistake and his afternoon was topped off with a wheel not problem. Again, not ideal, but the McLarens would still be faster than him, for Massa has been off the circuit more than on it this weekend. Hamilton didn't live up to expectations once again this weekend. Yes, the conditions what with the wind etc. were tricky, but everybody had to deal with them, and, after his mistake, he still had another go in which to set a good lap - and didn't. I would also like to hear why he did not dive into the pits after his fouled lap; he wasted a lap of fuel, which could be critical in the race. I'm surprised that ITV were so surprised by Kovalainen's great performance. He's shown good pace all season, his mediocre results being mainly down to stuff beyond his control and he did look very quick in last week's testing and practice this weekend. I think McLaren are the favourites to win the race tomorrow, but Ferrari are still in it; Raikkonen is carrying some fuel and the Ferrari's pretty kind on its tyres.

Congratulations to Webber today. I think he did a great job. We didn't see too much from the Renaults, but they did pretty well to qualify where they did: Alonso 6th and Piquet 7th. Vettel did well in the Toro Rosso, coming 8th, which again shows that he's getting the hang of Formula One and is really starting to outclass Bourdais. Interestingly, Heidfeld out qualified Kubica: :D , although Kubica did have a puncture or something. Finally, The Williams cars were truly awful today. I feel sorry for Rosberg and Nakajima having to drive those cars for the best part of two hours tomorrow.

McLaren seem to have something different going on around the radiator area

thats interesting, one intake smaller than the other...

heres what Heikki had to say
"It has been going really well all weekend," said the Finn. "We managed to put some more pace to the car last week and all week here we have been carrying on from that.

"Obviously I have been spending time around Silverstone for many years of my life, I have family and friends around here so it's great to have first pole here and tomorrow I'll try and carry on from where we are today.

"Kimi and Mark are around me are both are good drivers, very competitive, so it will not be easy tomorrow.

"Our pace has been very good all week and I am confident our strategy will be a strong one as well and tomorrow the target is to win the grand prix."

As for qualifying, Kovalainen concedes that the conditions were rather tricky as not only did the drivers have to contend with rain at the start of Q1 but the wind also picked up in the final segment.

"It was quite difficult conditions especially in the beginning of first session," he said.

"There was quite a dark sky and it was possible to get some rain and on my first run in Q1 I had a bit of traffic and didn't manage a good lap so had to do it before the rain came.

"Then the second part of qualifying went much better and in the last part we had quite difficult conditions. I think the wind picked up.

"The first run I was all over the place but the second run I put it together much better. I am very happy about it."

First. what a good picture. As for the design, interesting, to say the least.

Woohoo, go Kovy!

So what's up with Massa then...Vettel's ahead of him

He had a big shunt on FA's oil yesterday and they fixed the car, but maybe it's not perfect....

I was surprised that Ferrari werent dominant at all, especially with Massa way back in 9th.

He supposedly had a problem with his nuts :hehe:

Stefano:
First of all a shame it was a shame for Massa with a problem with a nut on the rear wheel. Very unlucky. We seen today some problems with our car and we need to understand properly. We will see tomorrow and we need to keep concentrated. We still feel confident and let's hope for the best.

How does one have a problem with a nut? It didn't fall off, did it? Or did Massa not go out on the last run at all?

They lost too much time with the nut at the right rear wheel to change tires and FM couldn't do the second run before the checkered flag.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. So his car is not in a bad shape after the accident, I imagine. I'd like to see another Massa-Kubica battle tomorrow :lightsabre:.

Yeah, I know :D I just wanted to make sure if everything is fine with Massa's car, so they could fight properly. I'm just now waiting for any info on Kubica's problem - it may be the same problem they had in free practice. I hope he won't have to start from the pit lane, that would be

So pleased for both Heikki and Mark, I think Heikki can get the job done tomorrow if Mark keeps position for several laps and keeps Lewis and Kimi behind fighting for position. I can see Heikki pulling away.

I predicted a McLaren on pole, now I predict a McLaren 1-2.
