A high-profile delegation from Red Bull Renault were odd visitors to McLaren's Woking headquarters on Wednesday.

Former McLaren employees David Coulthard, Martin Brundle and Adrian Newey, as well as their current team principal Christian Horner, were given a guided tour of the Mercedes-powered squad's factory by Martin Whitmarsh.

McLaren admitted in a media statement that the group drew 'many curious glances' from team staff as they worked.

It turns out that Coulthard, who drove for McLaren between 1996 and 2004, won the tour - and lunch for four - in a recent F1 charity auction.

"It's fantastic that he has put his hand in his own pocket to support this charity auction and it's great to see him back at Woking," Whitmarsh said.

"This afternoon showed that we still remain friends with many of our former drivers - because Martin, of course, is an ex-McLaren driver too."

I bet its like Wonkas chocolate factory in there, and thier cars are made like an airfix model (just like the adverts)
I can imagin Adrian Newey mingling in with umpalumpas in there rocket red shirts :lurker: and brundle being warned by Ron (aka Wonka) not to fall in the chocolate river....

sorry... :hiding:

I've a lot of time for Horner, Coulthard and Brundle, but have mixed emotions about Newey. He started off at McLaren very well, but from 2001 he should have been more of a team player, and perhaps Ron Dennis should have sent him packing sooner; there's no point in keeping a guy whose heart is not in his work.

I bet all paperwork and tech info was locked away before they arrived. As for Newey, Didn't Ron offer to build him a boat or something to stay after the Jag glitch, but the boat never turned up

The details are pretty sketchy, but what seems to have happened is that Ron Dennis offered him a load of inducements to stay, one of which was allowing Newey to design yachts.
