It's exactly what happened to Button. It's not nice to watch, but something has to bring everyone back to earth.

That said, throwing a huff about it and developing a persecution complex isn't going to endear him to anyone.

I think Jenson has come out of this quite well. He had a hard time after his first year at Williams, (I always thought Frank propped him up and sold him to Flavio in return for the bad Renault engines) however Button is being made to look good.

Lewis is so damn cheesy and corporate and always says the right things, or tries to and people want to vomit. Button is very much the cool cat and Lewis is the corporate machine...

Except that he didn't receive them. He has earned them. With his driving.

Sad how you see only his occasional brilliant speed... but choose to ignore everything else that also makes driver good or bad. His penalties are result of his driving. Driving that deserves penalties is BAD driving. And someone who is exhibiting bad driving can't be the best driver on the grid, now, can he?

Heiki's got penalized as well and hasn't started race from much better spot than Lewis, but managed to keep his head cool and made better progress (and no additional mistakes) through the race than Lewis did. I'm not saying Heiki is better than Lewis, but he did better job in France...

Lets see.. Your in a plane flying at 30k and 1 of your 4 engines goes out and LH can fly as good as he drives.. Do you feel safe? I think the press is saying why is it when a string breaks and whole rope fails to work.. My feeling.. cause you suck under pressure and you wine about your failed results that other people ( you claim) caused you to do.. And maybe the press is coming to the fact that you'll never be the champ that they wanted you to be.. even if you do win it somehow one year.. O I'm sorry.. Do I sound like I don't like screwy lewy.. Heikki Kovalainen has dismissed suggestions that McLaren are being victimised by the FIA.
Kovalainen and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton have struggled to get going in the past few races after being hit with a spate of penalties.
Both the McLaren drivers received grid penalties at the French Grand Prix while Hamilton was also punished with a drive-through penalty.
The Finn, though, believes they are receiving penalties for the right reasons.
"I don't think it's too many penalties," he told Autosport. "We get a penalty whenever we do something wrong.
"And I don't think we should read into it too much. We need to make sure we don't make mistakes and then we won't receive any penalties. I don't think there are more penalties for McLaren than for others.
"I think we have made some mistakes, I have made some mistakes and we need to make sure we won't do them again, and then it will be fine."

I do like Heikki. Think he's great and will do well but i think lewis has more potential, Hekki -a world championship. Lewis-many.

Also I agree that Lewis need's to drop his dad as manager and get a real one. His dad was great I guess in lower forms of racing but now that he is in the big leagues he need's someone with experience and who can help mentor him through all the press bs and let him focus on just the racing aspect.

I don't mind his dad, and I don't care wt he does... if he stayed out of the way. He tries to grab the media's eye just as much as his son. Almost living the dream through his son.

Now there is a good point. I've noticed that syndrome with parents managing their kids in other sports... tennis, for example. You just can't have someone emotionally involved (and protective) to manage you properly.

Building a champion is a tough job and you need someone with sergeant's mentality, not a parent... someone who will, when you make a mistake, slap your face hard and send you to scrub toilets (figuratively) rather than hug you and keep telling you "Don't worry, you're still the best".

Racechick, I've noticed that argument about Piquet and Alonso has become your major defense that you pull out whenever Lewis is under fire for his poor performance, so please tell me... why do you think it will hurt us that Piquet beat Alonso?

Nah Ive only mentioned it a couple of times in retaliation for stupid comments that Heikki finished higher than Lewis and implications that if Heiki could overcome his penalty then Lewis should have done(complete disregard here for the reality of the situation). I realise Piquet is not on Alonso's level, just said it to prove my point.

I guess he does, but he still has more downs - and some of them very critical downs - than other contenders in the same time period. I have unpleasant feeling - probably (still) influenced by the end of 2007 season - that he is more prone to make mistake in the most critical situations, when the pressure is the greatest - than Kimi (with all his downsides), or Alonso... maybe even Massa.

Actually I'm not sure about Massa - so far I failed to see him as rock solid either.

Now, he is still young and unexperienced so it should be acceptable that he is coping with pressure in less effective way than Kimi and Fernando, but even if short, his experience is very concentrated and yet I still don't see him improving - actually his 2007 was much stronger than 2008. Now that is worrying fact (or it would be if I happen to support him).

Now... I might be a bit too harsh on him, but then again, reason for that could be that he is presenting himself (outside the track) like he is already 5-times world championship and whole F1 revolves around him, so I (kind of) expect him to drive as he behaves - or to start behaving as he drives, which he does not.

Yes, I agree even James Allen picked up on it. It's Hamilton's belief of entitlement where he feels he has to have the best car and that the title is his destiny.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. His attitude does not match his merits.

I remember a couple of months ago I started a thread about Hamilton telling McLaren they must improve. I thought it was a bit cheeky for a rookie to tell a team like McLaren they must improve. Way back then I thought he was getting above his station.

Recent events have cemented this thought in my own mind.

I hope he doesn't 'do a Button'. I remember when Jenson had his great first year with Williams, the press went bananas, his popstar girlfriend wrote a song for him "Catch me if you can" Button thought he had made it, started to relax, got caught up in the playboy lifestyle which enraged Flavio when he moved to Bennetton.

Now Button has come full circle, he's working hard on his fitness and keeping his head down.

Hamilton needs to come down a peg or two and focus, get some WDC's under his belt and then he can strut around the pitlane all he likes... Until then,

That song came while he was at BAR, kicking a** and taking names, not when he was at Williams learning or Benetton fighting the worst car on the grid. Other than that, fairly accurate.

Lewis had loads of good press last year cause he made virtually no misstakes, so it is natural that they are going to turn. He cant have it both ways.
