Donington ParkFormula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has upped the pressure on Silverstone to come up with a deal to secure the future of British Grand Prix, by revealing he is also in talks with Donington Park about moving the race there.

Ecclestone and Silverstone's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, are in deadlock in discussions about a deal that will keep the race at the Northamptonshire track from 2010.

But with little movement on that front, Ecclestone revealed to The Times this morning that he was looking at alternative possibilities - and even claimed he would prefer it if Donington Park could put a deal together.

"We are discussing the possibility of reaching an agreement with Donington to host the British Grand Prix," Ecclestone was quoted as saying.

"We are trying to save the British Grand Prix and we want it to be staged at a venue which befits an event of its stature. I've been in negotiations for a long time and whether or not we're going to do a deal with Donington or Silverstone, I don't know.

"Donington have said they are going to build everything we want. Have they got the money? Only time will tell. But I think there is more chance of Donington having the money than the BRDC."

Although the amount of work Donington Park would need to be F1 ready makes a deal with them unlikely, the track's owners claim they are looking at it.

Lee Gill, joint chief executive of the company, said: "Formula One is not a walk in the park. It has implications in planning consent and the infrastructure and commercial terms of an F1 deal need careful consideration. We are looking at what the implications are if we took it on."

Donington Park boss Simon Gillett told this week's Motorsport News that F1 design guru Hermann Tilke had been contacted to draw up a revised layout for the track.

"Any track that is trying to get a Formula One Grand Prix knows it would take significant investment," said Gillettt.

"We'd have to have a look at how the regulations have changed over the course of the years to see what we would need to do to the circuit to bring it up to the standards required for Formula One in the modern age."

Donington's not a bad circuit, I'll certainly remember it fondly for the 1993 European Grand Prix, but I much prefer Silverstone; the circuit layout is better and the place has a lot more history about it.

Donnington's layout is alrite, If 93 had been in the dry it maybe wouldn't have been so good. I can't really picture a gd race around there with modern day F1 Cars. Furthermore, they have just built new pits, which would have to be overhauled once again, and probs change some of the track lay out?

However. I hear that Silverstone are going to bid to get the WTCC and the Moto Gp. If they succeeded then Donnington could invest heavily in the F1 project. Still think it's scare tactics by Bernie tho.

I read about this yesterday, I would love to see Donington back on the F1 calendar. I'm racing there next month too.

Donnington is a good track and all but im really not sure if the layout is interesting enough for formula one, the 93 gp was fantastic but more for the brilliance of senna than the track itself.
For me Silverstone or Brands have more interesting layout for F1 racing

Donnington is about 10mins from my house which sounds good but actually I'd rather drive to Silverstone and camp. I saw the moto GP at Donnington 2yrs ago, it was good but i would have thought not enough Grandstands?
The whole circuit area feels much smaller than Silverstone. I hope it stays at Silverstone.

Every time I see a race at Donington on TV, it's raining though :(

I thought it was alway's raining in Inglend??

Beautifully sunny right now Tex, and sunbathing weather at Silverstone for at least part of the weekend for the past 7 or so years. :tumbleweed:

However guess what it did when i watched moto gp :brolly::laugh::laugh:

Tilke visits Donington
A possible Silverstone replacement?
01/07/08 10:07

F1's usual circuit designer Hermann Tilke has apparently visited Donington Park in contemplation of a major upgrade to the Leicestershire circuit.

Although derided by some, it has been claimed that the venue, scene of Ayrton Senna's legendary victory in 1993, is stepping up a bid to become the new home of the British Grand Prix if Silverstone drops off the annual F1 schedule.

Faced with the reality that Donington is in even more dire need of renovation than Silverstone, however, F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone said last month: "I think there is more chance of Donington having the money (to do it) than the BRDC."

German designer Tilke's company Tilke GmbH, and Donington Park, did not comment on the latest rumours.

Donington did say they would do a feasibility study, so perhaps this is all part of it. The circuit is pretty bland the current infrastructure makes Silverstone look like a palace. That Tilke may be the one the modify the track is a sure sign that it will be boring. Please, please, please Silverstone, get something sorted!
