Here are the reports and times for the first and second practice sessions:

From Planet F1:

Prac One: Massa leads the way in France
Friday 20th June 2008

Felipe Massa was the pace-setter in the final Friday morning practice to ever take place at the Magny-Cours circuit in France.

As the circuit's final grand prix weekend kicked off Ferrari's Massa proved to be the man to beat and the only one to get below the 1:16 barrier.

The Brazilian clocked a 1:15.306 to finish ahead of McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen.

Report: With dark clouds overhead Giancarlo Fisichella was the first driver out on track, followed by a string of cars which within ten minutes meant that everyone barring the two Ferraris had completed an installation lap.

Nico Rosberg completed the first lap of the morning, a 1:19.217 for the Williams driver who took a second off his time the following lap. The German continued to lower the benchmark, joined by Sebastien Bourdais, Seb Vettel and Kazuki Nakajima out on track.

vettel went P1, breaking into the 1:16s, followed by Nelson Piquet Jr, who was soon deposed by David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. Heikki Kovalainen also bumped Piquet Jr down a position.

The McLaren driver improved to first place on his next lap with a 1:16.552. However, he was dethroned by the arrival of Felipe Massa, while Kimi Raikkonen went P3.

Kovalainen then returned to the P1 slot, half a second up on Massa's time with Lewis Hamilton going fourth on his first timed lap. Raikkonen improved to second place only to drop back down to third when Hamilton clocked a 1:16.002 to hit the front.

With half the session completed only the two BMWs had yet to set lap times, while Vettel, Fernando Alonso, David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli completed the top eight behind the McLarens and Ferraris.

F1's newest race winner and Championship leader Robert Kubica went P5 on his first timed lap of the morning, before losing out to Alonso.

Massa took advantage of a clear track to clock a 1:15.896 and head to the top of the table, 0.34s ahead of Hamilton, who also made his way out for another run along with Kovalainen and Raikkonen.

Massa lowered the benchmark on his next lap and again the following lap after setting the fastest second and third sector times.

Hamilton and Kovalainen pushed hard, struggling to keep their MP4-23s on the race-track. Hamilton went off at the Adelaide hairpin while Kovalainen got out of shape at the high-speed Nurburgring chicane.

With ten minutes remaining Hamilton returned to the track after his McLaren mechanics had worked on the front of his MP4-23 to resolve whatever was causing his to lock-up. The Brit, though, was unable to close the gap to Massa, in fact losing ground as the Brazilian continued to improved his P1 time.

The yellow flags came out for the first time with three minutes left on the clock when Fernando Alonso pulled up at Turn Eight with smoke pouring out of the back of his Renault.

Practice One ended with Massa on top, followed by Hamilton, Kovalainen, Raikkonen and Kubica. Alonso, Trulli and Vettel completed the top eight.

Prac Two: Alonso pulls of a French surprise
Friday 20th June 2008

Fernando Alonso showed his master class in Friday's second French practice, placing his Renault at the top of the timesheets ahead of the two Ferraris.

In a closely-fought session, which saw all the drivers from P1 to 13 within one second of each other, Alonso put in a late charge to take the P1 slot away from Felipe Massa. Kimi Raikkonen was third.

Report: With the sun blazing down and a track temperature of 41'C Fernando Alonso hit the track, the first out. However, it was Seb Bourdais who set the first time of the afternoon, a 1:18.745.

Nelson Piquet Jr soon surpassed him before he himself was overhauled by Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn, though, didn't remain on top for long as his team-mate Lewis Hamilton posted a 1:16.500 to take the P1 slot.

Sebastian Vettel went second, 0.151s off the pace, before he was overtaken by Fernando Alonso. Bourdais improved to fourth place, slotting in behind his team-mate as Toro Rosso put in some good early runs.

Pushing hard Kimi Raikkonen went off at Estoril corner, taking to the astroturf, while team-mate Felipe Massa went second quickest on his first run, under a tenth off Hamilton's leading time. Raikkonen improved to second place.

David Coulthard posted the fastest middle sector time on his way to fifth place.

More problems for Fernado Alonso who runs off the track at the 180 degree left-hander. The Spaniard used a new engine for this session after his previous power unit blew at the end of the morning's practice.

Massa clocked a 1:16.359 to move to the front of the pack, 0.141s ahead of Hamilton. The Brazilian's reign was short-lived as Kovalainen, using the soft tyre compound, took over at the top, edging Massa by 0.019.

In sharp contrast team-mate Hamilton once again struggled to stay on the track, going off at the Nurburgring chicane. The next lap he was in the gravel at Turn Three and the following lap hit the dirt at the Estoril corner.

Raikkonen took over at the front on the harder option Bridgestones only to lose out to Massa who broke into the 1:15s as Ferrari looked to dominate the proceedings.

Vettel moved up to fourth place ahead of Hamilton as Massa lost it at the Imola chicane, taking to the gravel before returning to his Ferrari garage.

Nelson Piquet Jr joins the list of those going off the track, having a moment at Chateau d'Eau before Adrian Sutil gets out of shape exiting the high-speed Imola chicane.

Vettel improved to P3 but lost it a few minutes later to Alonso. Kubica moved up sixth place ahead of Hamilton who spent more than 30 minutes in the pits getting his car sorted out after his last trip into the gravel. The Brit, though, pitted after just one lap while Nick Heidfeld took seventh place off him.

With seven minutes left on the clock Alonso jumped to the top of the timesheets, putting in an impressive lap to post a 1:15.776. Hamilton moved up to fourth place behind the two Ferraris.

I don't think there were any big surprises. Ferrari do look to have the fastest car for this weekend. I'm expecting a little more the BMWs, for I think they had technical problems, so were not able to show their full potential.

Expect Alonso to get some points to.

Massa I think can win this weekend
Kimi 2nd, Kubica 3rd?
Alonso/Heidfeld fight for 4th

I'm forgetting the Mclarens here, but Heikki's best hope probs 3rd, Lewis: To score at all really.

Is it just me that think's the only reason BMW is behind Ferrari and McLaren is their aerodynamics? Their package seems to be all about downforce and not speed?

Yeah think alot of it could be that. Remember they came a long way back when you think bout how poor they were in Winter testing. BMW were famed for their engines back in the Williams days.

they do have the most winglets out of the top 3 which would make them least aero efficient. which would explain the removal of the nose horns in Canada for some straight line speed down the long straight there.

as for the times hard to say with Fridays as per usual, but if you take anything from it Ferrari look to have the upper hand here.

Lewis' only hope for a podium is if it rains

I have trouble understanding chat lingo too! but its not because I'm old :) its because this is the only forum i participate in, and i don't like chatting or MSN...

Heck I even have a hard time understanding the drivers' names abreviations! KR, RK, JB, JV, SV, FM, MW, MS, AS :screwy::x messes with my head.

I think Massa is the fastest here, he can get PP if he doesn't make a mistake. He would probably be on top in FP2 too, but somehow he didn't improve on the softer tyres in the last run. I wonder if Alonso is going to pull something out of the bag, like in Spain.
