From F1 Live:

Bernie Ecclestone has once again raised the spectre of a Formula One 'breakaway' -- but warns that he will not be able to lead the sport if that does happen.

The F1 chief executive, at war with the out-of-favour FIA President Max Mosley over a new Concorde Agreement, is contractually bound to the Paris body through Formula One Management's (FOM) long-term lease of the sport's commercial rights.

But with the separate tripartite Concorde Agreement now out of date, 77-year-old Ecclestone says one solution to the current impasse for the teams is to simply go it alone without FOM or the FIA.

"I told the teams, if they wish to break away, then do it, but we couldn't be part of it," the Briton is quoted as saying by eatsleepsport.com.

I think a breakaway series would be the demise of our beloved sport and it's historical significance??

From what I gather a 'breakaway series' means there would be two seperate series or am I missing something? :?

Well we all know a break away will only happen if Ferrari is onboard in which case all teams will leave the FIA Formula 1 world championship. And create GP1 World Championship etc

though i dunno why Bernie has been talking Break away when he has also said that he cannot be apart of the breakaway as FOM is contracted to the FIA.

Though im sure he has plans to get around that fact by buying into the new consortium maybe alongside his friend Flavio.

Hm. Do we know if it's FOM or Bernie personally that owns "GP1"? If it's Bernie, he could easily resign from FOM or simply have both jobs (I suspect the former), taking his personal fortune and the name with him to help form the Breakaway.

FOM own the rights to 'Formula 1' 'F1' etc.. but from what ive read the contract is up for renewal very soon.
The thing is if there is a breakaway series there would be no guarntee bernie would be involved, i mean after all the money he has screwed out of the teams, track owners and race orginisers would a breakaway series want him.
The problem is all the deals that have been done and paid for cant be transferd or switched because FOM is an independant company who sells the rights they bought from the FIA.
I dont think the BBC or ITV would want to shell out more money for new broadcasting rights not to mention track advertisers. And would team sponsers stick around, if i was a company that paid to sponser a Formula one team and then that team pulled out for commercial reasons, i would serously reconsider my sponsership.

A breakaway series is all well and good in theroy but i dont know if the companies that are sponsering F1 would like the idea and at the end of the day no sponsers no money no teams no racing.

(sorry for my spelling - being unemployed for 3 months i think my brain is going to mush from boredom)
