From F1 Live:

At least two of Lewis Hamilton's key rivals would beat the 23-year-old British driver in the same car.

That is the belief of F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone, who told The Times newspaper that he ranks former double world champion Fernando Alonso as the best current driver on the grid.

"If he was still in a McLaren he would be showing Lewis the way home - I don't think there is any doubt about that," Ecclestone, 77, said.

Bernie said he sympathised with Alonso, who moved back to Renault this year, after he fell out so spectacularly with McLaren as rookie Hamilton's team-mate in 2007.

"I never asked the guy - I'm going to ask him one day - whether he was told (by McLaren) he was number one.

"Because if he didn't ask and he wasn't told, he would have assumed he was.
Having a guy that's never been in a F1 car in the team with him, he'd expect to be number one wouldn't he?"

"And that's what the problem was. When he found out, although he should have been number one, of course he wasn't," Ecclestone added.

The F1 CEO also rates Robert Kubica, the Canadian Grand Prix winner and new championship leader, very highly.

"If you saw him in a McLaren or a Ferrari, I think I'd put my money on him blowing away Hamilton," Ecclestone said.

It's funny how Ecclestone told Mosley to mind his own business yesterday when it came to talking about the financial side of the new Concorde Agreement, should the teams et al. ever get round to writing and signing it. Now, he's sticking his nose in how McLaren operates, having initially claimed in this article and other sources that he's not even sure of what happened and what Alonso's position in the team was!

Err... Hamilton beat Alonso in the same car in ‘07...

Yeah, that small detail, too.

Ach he beat Alonso technically, I'll conceed that.

I do think Kubica and Alonso are certainly 2 of the best in the field. Beating Hamilton - I dno, but those 3 fighting would be great.

LOL
I was going to post this article but then saw that comment on the photo and decided against it... :x

I agree with Bernie however... Kubica and Alonso are the best drivers right now.
And if what Kimi needed was some motivation / competition here it is. He better deliver.

Exactly!
Three good drivres tho. I dislike Alonso but you cant take the driving away from him. I personally still rate the other two higher.

Ditto, just replace Alonso with Hamilton

Speedwise, I doubt there's much between them. Alonso has the experience which would benefit him everything else being equal, Kubica maybe still has to show what he could do over a complete season in a competitive car (I don't doubt him btw) and Hamilton has to learn from his mistakes.

Sure, but Alonso was dealing with his inner demons (and outer ones as well  ) and that could of influenced his performance a bit. Just by avoiding his stupid qualifying act in Budapest (and penalty earned) he would likely end up with more points than Lewis.

What I'm trying to say is, Lewis didn't beat him completely on the track, there was psychological warfare going on that Lewis also won (with a little help from the friends).

I would say they are pretty much even behind the wheel, but I'll give Alonso that he is better package at present - Lewis is missing ingredients that come with experience and boy, does he miss them big time once in a while.

What makes me wonder is, last year Bernie was so enthusiastic for Lewis, seeing him as very commercial material (something Kimmi is missing), and we all know when Bernie opens mouth, it's money talk. I don't think Kubica is that commercial potential, and Alonso... hard to say; one way or another, I'd expect Bernie to praise Lewis simply for being most suitable for Bernie's interests.

So... wonder what is Bernie up to. I he only being honest? Bernie? Yeah, right.

That's largely true, but it was just too good a dig to make at Ecclestone. 8)

I agree with Ecclestone that they are both better or at least as good as. Hammy is nothing so extra ordinary as some make out.
The main thing here is that if someone with talent is in a top car they will shine.

News Flash: This has nothing to do with the fact that I think personally Hammy is a DH or that he drives for McLaren. Believe it or Not
